A one-hour public radio special created by local resident Jerry Zolten and co-hosted with Harvey Pekar of the magazine/book/movie American Splendor, will have its broadcast debut this Friday, November 16 on WPSU Radio, 91.5 on the dial, Penn State Public Broadcasting, beginning at 9 p.m.
The program, which is Zolten’s third radio special, is called “Boppin’ with Pekar” and is an overview of jazz history from Jelly Roll Morton and Louis Armstrong to Miles Davis and John Coltrane. The web link is: http://www.prx.org/pieces/20883.
Following this debut, the show will be available for broadcast nationwide.
Zolten is the author of Great God A’Mighty! The Dixie Hummingbirds: Celebrating the Rise of Soul Gospel Music [Oxford University Press].
He is the producer for: Isaac Freeman & the Bluebloods Beautiful Stars [Lost Highway Records] and The Fairfield Four Wreckin’ the House [Dead Reckoning Records].
He is the host of: “Chimpin’ the Blues”, a program of early blues with cartoonist R. Crumb; “Boppin’ With Pekar”, a jazz history with graphic novelist and jazz critic Harvey Pekar and “In the Spirit”, a history of African American gospel.
