ohn E. Detwiler, 84, passed away on Saturday, November 17, 2007 at the Eagle Valley Nursing Home in Milesburg.
He was born to the late John J. and Carrie Harsbarger Detwiler on September 23, 1923 in Tyrone, PA.
He attended Tyrone High School until he entered the U.S. Army Air Force on December 11, 1942 and served with the 1259th Army AFB Unit, Air Transport Command. He also served as a military policeman. He received the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theater Service Medal, the European American Theater Service Medal, and a World War II Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged on February 10, 1946.
On May 9, 1946 in Cumberland, Maryland, he married Elaine M. Bathurst, who survives along with his six children: Judy Stuck of Pleasant Gap; Barry J. (Molly) of Bellefonte; Carol Robb (George) of Bellefonte; Jonnie J. (Michelle) of Bellefonte; Bonnie Gephart (Derek Rudy), and Douglas K. (Deborah) of Bellefonte. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Also surviving are his brothers and sisters: Peggy Sprankle of Tyrone; Earl O. Detwiler of Glasgow, PA; Bernard Detwiler of New York; Bertie Garman of Bellwood; Kaye Sprankle of Tyrone; Faye Sigel of Warriors Mark; Marcie Cady of North Carolina; and Sally Biddle of Warriors Mark. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers Chalmer L. and Gary.
He was employed by the Penn State University until his retirement. He was a life member of the VFW and Pleasant Gap Legion.
Services were held at the Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral and Cremation Services P.C., 1034 Benner Pike, State College at the convenience of the family. Interment was at the Centre County Memorial Park.
