The game plan for Bishop Guilfoyle was simple, but complex, shut down Steve Catich. This is not an easy task to achieve, but the relentless pressure on Brandon Gehret and other players behind half court forced the Golden Eagles away from their style of basketball.
After six straight wins, Tyrone matched up good against Bishop Guilfoyle, but the Marauders just straight-up outplayed Tyrone, Thursday night. The Marauders jumped out early behind Andy Lytle, as he led Bishop Guilfoyle to a 16-9 lead after the first quarter. Lytle dropped his own 8-0 run, and scored 11 of his game-high 27 points early on in the game.
Tyrone looked sluggish and passive on offense compared to the previous six games. Maybe they overlooked the Marauders, and Bishop Guilfoyle is never a team to overlook.
The second quarter was just as bad as the first as Tyrone managed only 10 more points to the Marauders 14, trailing 30-19. Catich was getting harassed the entire game, forcing others to try and beat the Marauders.
The second half did not get any better for the Eagles as they failed to score a point in the first four minutes of the third quarter. Bishop Guilfoyle took advantage by scoring six straight points on their way to a 12-3 run with 2:07 remaining in the third quarter (42-22).
Tyrone’s composure was totally lost, but managed to outscore the Marauders in the last two minutes, 6-2, but that was about as good as it got for Tyrone.
With the score 44-28 in favor of the Marauders after three-quarters, Tyrone needed to pull out all the tricks they knew and fast. But tonight wasn’t a magical night for Tyrone, so the tricks just did not work.
Tyrone did manage to score their highest quarter in the fourth (17), but Bishop Guilfoyle still put up 16 points, defeating Tyrone 60-45 in the opening round of the 2007 Chevy Shootout.
With the loss, Tyrone snaps their six game winning streak, and forces them into a consolation game on Saturday at 2:30. Catich still kept up his average, scoring 23 points, but left the remaining players on Tyrone with 22 points. When Tyrone has little output from players other than Catich, it is very hard to win games. Nate Dane chipped in 10 points in the losing effort. The Eagles will play the loser of Friday night’s game between Fairview and Westmont Hilltop.
Bishop Guilfoyle lit up the Golden Eagles for 60 points behind the crisp passing of Chris Brown and the hot hand of Andy Lytle. Lytle led the way with 27 points, knocking down two treys and absolutely controlling Tyrone’s defense with his elusive scores. Brown had several defenders going opposite ways with his tricky passes. The Marauders are the host of the Chevy Shootout, and what else can you ask for than play in your own tournament championship.
