Tyrone came into Monday night’s contest with a bitter taste in their mouth from the Indian Valley three-point loss. The Eagles completely owned the Panthers, putting up 83 points in a gun-slinging battle.
Steve Catich needed just 22 points to reach 1,000 points for his career. The senior has averaged over 24 points a game this season, so 22 points should be an average night for him right?
Well, Matt Brooks and Nate Dane seemed to clean up and make Catich’s job much easier as the two combined for 21 points a piece, both career high’s. The two contributed the entire game, constantly getting inside offensive rebounds and putting them back.
Kyle Updyke also joined the double-digit club, scoring 15 points as well. The four players scored a combined 76 points on the night, 42 from Brooks and Dane, 19 from Catich and 15 from Updyke. The four players were unstoppable and consistently made baskets in the win for the Eagles.
Tyrone out-rebounded the Panthers 46-17, racking up 21 offensive boards in the victory. Catich recorded a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, putting him three points shy of 1,000 points. Dane and Brooks combined for 42 points and 18 rebounds, putting the pressure on the Panther defense in trying to shut them down.
“I told these guys that when the shots go up, we will get a lot of easy put-backs with our size,” head coach George Gripp stated. “That’s exactly what happened today and I’m glad we did that because we didn’t play our best on defense tonight. Obviously we could have played better defense in the game, but it’s a victory and I’m pleased with the effort.”
Tyrone had some problems with Crippen Taylor and Andy Grant, as the two racked up 39 points for Penn Cambria. Taylor kept them in it early, scoring 15 of his 19 points in the first half while Grant put up 17 of his 20 in the second half. The two were threats to Tyrone, but the Eagles managed to get around the two tough guards as they pulled off an 83-70 win at home.
The Eagles travel to Philipsburg on Tuesday, trying to overcome the last match-up between the two squads as the Mounties won on a game-winner at the buzzer, thanks to Matt Curtis.
“Well there are two guys we have to worry about, JD Mason and Matt Curtis. Curtis is a tough cover for us because of his three-point threat and his ability to drive and dish. He sets up a lot of guys for easy shots, so we have to be on top of that. We are playing back-to-back nights, so we won’t have any practice time against these guys, which isn’t going to help, but I think our team is experienced enough to go up there and get the job done.”
Tyrone moves to 9-3 on the year as they face off against a tough Philipsburg squad on Tuesday night. A lot of spread scoring and hard-nosed defense will get the job done.
Catich needs three points for 1,000, so everyone get out to Philipsburg, Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
