The Blair County Department of Solid Waste & Recycling has scheduled a home composting class on August 26 at 6 p.m.
The class will be held at the Altoona Heritage Center, 1421 12th Avenue Altoona. Advance registration, by calling 696-4620, will assure admission to the class.
Each participating household will receive a free home composting bin under a project sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and The Pennsylvania State University.
Participants will learn, among other details, what items to compost and which items to avoid, how to create the best conditions for the natural process of composting to occur and how to know when compost is ready to use.
According to the Blair County DSWR website, compost can be used as a conditioner to improve the moisture-retention properties of soil. In addition, compost adds valuable nutrients to soil to promote healthy plant growth. Uses can include: home gardening, greenhouses, landscaping  and soil top-dressing.
Also, the Blair County Department of Solid Waste and Recycling would like to remind area residents of the convenient recycling drop-off centers right here in the community.
The centers are located at the Snyder Township Municipal Building and at the Tyrone District Justice’s Office.
Drop-off centers accept: aluminum beverage cans, metal food cans, plastic No. 1 and No. 2 bottles, corrugated cardboard, newspapers and telephone books.
For additional information, call the Blair County Department of Solid Waste & Recycling at 949-2566 or 696-4620, or visit blaircounty.org.
