Tyrone had a bitter taste in their mouth from the last match-up, only winning 74-72 after leading by 18 points going into the fourth quarter of their previous match-up. Bellefonte had their best chance against Tyrone to pick up their first win, but Tyrone had other plans for the Red Raiders and their thoughts were on winning Thursday night’s game.
Tyrone came out slow in the first quarter, as they shot 4-for-12 from the field and scored just 10 points to Bellefonte’s seven. Luckily, the Golden Eagles picked it up and never looked back as the Eagles charged a devastating 17-3 run, led by Kyle Updyke, who scored 13 of his game, season and career-high 25 points in the second quarter. The first quarter was shaky, but the second belonged to the Eagles as they forced 12 turnovers and shot 10-17 from the field.
Updyke was playing the game of his life, scoring 16 points in the first half and managing to make ridiculous lay-ups that dropped every jaw in the gymnasium. However, Steve Catich was completely out of the picture in the first half, as he scored his only basket in the first half for Tyrone’s first two points. This proves Tyrone has the depth they need, and every night someone different seems to step up and score.
“I just tried to help Steve [Catich] out,” Updyke said, “because they just wouldn’t let him touch the ball. They gave everyone else on the floor a chance to do something, and we took advantage of it.”
Tyrone had a 33-14 lead at the break, and seemingly enough, the Eagles cruised through the second half, behind Travis Peterman, Catich and Updyke. The trio combined for 27 of their 41 points in the second half.
Tyrone outscored and outplayed Bellefonte 41-22 in the second half, giving the Eagles their 13th win, 74-36. An all-around great effort by the Eagles, Thursday night, as they out rebounded, outscored, had less turnovers and forced a “mercy-rule” running clock late in the fourth quarter. It was a perfect night for Tyrone, nothing could go wrong.
Updyke led the charge with 25 points along with Peterman’s 14. Peterman knocked down four treys, simply crushing any hopes of a comeback with every shot. Catich had 11 points and 11 rebounds, picking up the double-double in the win. Tyrone shot 48% from the field, and out rebounded the Red Raiders 33-19. The Eagles travel to Bellwood for the rivalry match-up both teams have been waiting for.
“We focused all week in practice,” Gripp stated, “on not allowing Bellefonte to reach 40 points, and we held them to 36. We’re going to get back to the basics tomorrow and Saturday morning before the game to prepare for Bellwood. When you only have one day of practice before each game it gets tough to try and put things into your game plan. We know they have Ben Hatch from the outside and Alan Wertz in the paint, and that’s going to be the challenge for us. The guys are really looking forward to going up to Bellwood Saturday and playing.”
Bellefonte came into Thursday’s game hoping that they could have a tight game like the first meeting, but holding Catich under 20 points was just not enough to stop this high-flying Tyrone team. None of the Red Raiders reached double-figures in points, but Zach Tressler managed to lead them with eight in the rough loss. Bellefonte remains winless, and best of luck in finding the first “W.”

Levi Reihart knocked down 11 points in the loss, continuing to keep his lead role in the scoring department. A tough loss at home, however, as the Red Raiders’ Billy Nadolsky led their charge with 15 points.
