2007-08 Golden Eagle Junior High Boys Basketball team The Tyrone Junior High Boys Basketball Team completed their 2007-08 season with a second -place finish at the Bishop McCort Junior High Basketball Tournament in Johnstown. Tyrone’s Golden Eagles competed in Bishop McCort’s annual basketball tournament over the weekend, and finished the tournament in the championship game against the undefeated Tigers of Hollidaysburg. The Eagle’s played three games in all, winning their first and second games over Bishop McCort and Richland; then falling victim to the impressive Tigers Monday evening.
Against the host team on Friday, the Eagle’s found a worthy opponent in the Crushers as both teams matched up in man defense for the entire game. The Crushers took the first half lead 25-20, had ideas of winning their own event and got out in front of the Eagle’s after three periods leading 47-35.
“ We came out flat in the second half again and they jumped all over us,” said Coach Stever.
The Eagles would put together their best quarter of basketball in the fourth putting up 32 points in all. Led by Rich Stever, who scored 20 of his game high 25 points in the fourth quarter; the Eagle’s outscored the Crushers 32-12 to win 67-59. Jared Templeton paced the Eagle’s with a solid performance pulling down 12 rebounds and scoring 23 points.
Saturday evening the Eagle’s took on the Richland Rams at the McCort gymnasium. Tyrone jumped out to an early 11-2 lead, but the Ram’s settled down and caught up at the break tying the game 19-19. The Eagle’s won the third period 15-12 and led by three points as the fourth period would be a nail bitter with the game knotted at 40-40 with less than 2 minutes remaining. Jared Templeton scored 17 of his game high 23 points in the second half to carry the victory for the Eagle’s.
“Jared dominated the entire game for us tonight,” said Stever. “Richland did not have anyone near as physical as him out there so we just kept pounding it into our big guy and he did the rest.”
Rich Stever followed with 10 points, and Jim Ferguson with seven.
Monday evening, in the championship game, against undefeated Hollidaysburg; the out-matched Eagle’s went down quickly as the Tigers jumped all over the Eagle’s 50-9 at the half.
“Their first six players are just flat out unbelievably quick, big, strong, and skilled,” said Stever, “and none of them played the second half. Thank God.”
With the game well in hand the Tigers cruised to a convincing championship win 70-35. Rich Stever and Jared Templeton led the scoring for Tyrone with 10 and nine points, followed by six points from Jordan Faretta.
The Eagle’s finished their season with an overall record of 15-10.
