In the VFW Teener League Area 4 15-16-year old All-Star Tournament, Tyrone scored twice in the top of the seventh inning in a last-ditch effort to defeat Bellwood, at Bellwood.
It was a great game, between two quality teams, where you hate to have to see one team lose. In the top of the seventh, John Kimberling singled with one out. Evan Brush doubled to put runners at second and third. Alfie Diehl bounced into an RBI groundout to score Kimberling to tie the game 1-1. Then with two outs, Jordan Faretta delivered a clutch base hit to drive in Brush with what would prove to be the winning run.
After playing scoreless baseball for the first three innings, Bellwood had taken the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Derrick Denny singled and Jared Minori doubled to drive in Denny with the first run of the game. Minori was out trying to steal third for the final out of the inning.
Tyrone’s Faretta and Bellwood’s Minori were the only players with two hits.
Doug Rudy survived a tough bottom of ther seventh to win a complete-game victory, giving up just one ri=un on five hits, with eight strikeouts and two walks. Rudy pitched around four errors by his teammates, while Bellwood committed no miscues.
Tyler Beech, who also went the distance, took the tough-luck loss for Bellwood, scattering eight hits, with five strikeouts and four walks. Beech pitched six scoreless inningsbefore the Tyrone outbreak in their final at-bat
Tyrone is now 1-1 in the five-team round robin, in which each team will play all the others twice. Bellwood is 0-2.
