Tyrone Area High School students recently wrapped up their very successful production of “West Side Story” on the school’s auditorium stage.
For all their hard work and dedication, the cast received nominations in all eight categories of the Altoona Community Theatre’s Isaac Mishler Awards.
The mission of the Altoona Community Theatre’s Isaac Mishler Awards is to encourage and support excellence in high school musical theatre in the region through an annual awards event that recognizes student achievement.
Nominations for Tyrone include:
• Best Actor in a Leading Role: Jonathan Harris as Tony
• Best Actress in a Leading Role: Sofia Revolorio as Maria
• Best Actress in a Supporting Role: Stevie Woodring as Anita
• Best Actor in a Supporting Role: Derik Cruz as Bernardo
• Best Choreography: entire cast of West Side Story
• Best Actress/Actor in a Featured Role: Liz Romano as Anybody’s
• Best Overall Production: Tyrone Area High School’s “West Side Story”
“It is quite an honor for TAHS to be nominated in all eight categories and truly reflects the high level of excellence these young students brought to the stage. I am so proud of their performances,” said TAHS musical director, Catherine Young.
There are 12 other area high schools nominated for awards in Blair, Bedford and Cambria counties.
The Isaac’s are scheduled to be held in Altoona’s Historic Mishler Theatre on June 1 at 7 p.m. where the awards will be presented.
Judges from ACT attended both nights of the show’s production and evaluated the shows to determine the winner in each category.
More than 44 TAHS students brought this musical masterpiece to life on the stage, along with the portrayal of the adults by teachers David Rutter, as Lt. Shrank, Cummins McNitt as Doc and TASD security officer “Bub” Dick as Officer Krupke.
Catherine Young, musical director, conducted the 22-piece orchestra with Karen Volpe, Mishler Theatre Manager, handling the drama direction. Set design and construction were created by Eric Feather and the TAHS arts studio students with the aid of Don Dietz of Huntingdon. Stage Manager was math teacher Stephanie Haid.
