Locker Room outslugs Tyrone Legion

If you like lots of offense, this was a game to see. Tyrone Legion and Locker Room combined for 30 hits and 21 runs scored, Monday evening in Hollidaysburg.
Locker Room scored in bunches, with a pair of first-inning tallies to take the early lead, then six in the third stanza and five more in the fourth to outlast Tyrone Legion, 13-8.
Tyrone Legion put all their runs on the board in the middle three frames, temporarily tying the score with two runs in the top of the third, and scoring four in the fourth and adding two final scores in the fifth.
Mike Pechtold’s three-run home run in the bottom of the third was the big blow for Locker Room, giving his team a four-run lead they never gave up, in the hit-hit-hit contest. Winning pitcher Derick Coppersmith led off the third inning with a home run for Locker Room to quickly break the tie, and Locker Room never looked back.
Donnie Hunter, who took the loss for the Legion, had three hits, and Matt Brooks, Aaron Cunningham and Adam Bonsell each had two hits for Tyrone Legion, with Brooks and Kris Decker unloading doubles. Brooks, Cunningham, Eric Desch and Tyler Golden each had one RBI.
Hunter struck out one and walked two, while Brock Anders fanned three batters and didn’t walk a batter in relief.
Joe Hargis and Joe Ulsh each had three hits, with Hargis banging out two doubles and Ulsh one. Coppersmith picked up the win, striking out six and walking one.
Tyrone Legion (7-9) will play Dick’s Pharmacy today at Geesey Park at 6 p.m.

Pitching, clutch offense keys Martin Oil over Cpl. Miller

Martin Oil scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning at Stadium Drive field in Bellwood and then spent the rest of the game catching up against Corporal Miller in George B. Kelley Federation baseball on Monday. With a lot of good relief pitching and defense, and some clutch hitting, Martin Oil was able to pull out a 6-5 win.
After finally getting even at 5-5, Martin Oil shortstop Nate Gray led off the home half of the seventh inning with a base hit to left. Gray moved up to second base on a throwing error, before Chad Coho delivered a single to center to score Gray with the walkoff game-winning single.
In all, Coho had three singles and a walk to enjoy a perfect night at the plate. Each single drove in a run.
In the first, Gray walked and stole second, then scored the first tally of the game on a single by Coho.
Cpl. Miller scored all their runs in the next two innings to take the lead.
First, Chris Carper doubled and scored on a single by starting pitcher Shawn Conrad, and Conrad came around to score on a double by Will Snyder.
Then, in the third, leading 2-1, Cpl. Miller scored three times, without a base hit. Ian Pankoke came in to relieve Mike Albright, who pitched the opening two innings for Martin Oil and promptly walked the bases full. Carper got one run home on an RBI groundout to first, and Pankoke got the second out on a strikeout. Conrad walked and Pankoke hit Snyder with a pitch to score the second run of the inning. Jared Coho came in to pitch and walked the first batter to force in the third run of the inning and give Cpl. Miller a 5-1 advantage, before Coho fanned the next hitter for the third out.
Coho then tossed two shutout innings, and Justin Miller pitched two more scoreless innings, giving the Martin Oil offense time to catch up. Coho gave up no hits, with one strikeout and one walk, and Miller, who picked up the victory, fanned four and walked two in two hitless innings. Cpl. Miller was held to just three hits by the four Martin Oil pitchers, all in the second inning.
“Mike, Jared and Justin all did a nice job pitching for us,” said Martin Oil manager Ed Davis. “We were down 5-1 and could have given in. Instead, our pitchers gave us an opportunity to get our bats going, and we took it and got a win. On a negative note, we still managed to give up seven bases on balls and hit a batter. We never seem to get an easy one, we have to do everything the hard way.
“Jared Coho, in particular, did a very good job on the mound, coming in with the bases loaded and limiting the damage, and then pitching two scoreless innings. Justin Miller shut the door and was able to get a win for us, when Nate and Chad got us the run we needed.”
Martin Oil closed the margin to 5-2 in the third inning on a pair of errors by Cpl. Miller, and then tied the game with three runs in the fifth to set up the finish by Gray and Chad Coho.
Justin Manning doubled to open the bottom of the frame and Jimmy Watters singled him to third. Watters stole second to put runners at second and third with nobody down. Gray drove in Manning with a sacrifice fly to center. Coho singled to get Watters home. Adam Kovac drew a walk, before Jake Manning singled to center to score pinch runner Jess Davis with the tying run.
Martin Oil (11-7) plays Locker Room today in a doubleheader. The first game, suspended because of rain and lightning on June 23, has Locker Room up 2-1 and batting in the bottom of the fourth. Then the regularly scheduled game will be played at the conclusion of the first game.

Walking in the Right Direction A column by Bill Ellenberger for The Daily Herald

What a special time for family and friends. Picnics and Fireworks. This is not the biggest holiday of the summer or an indication that our limited summer is half over. Please remember that this is American Independence Day.
The words of a well known columnist wrote: “We tend to forget that to sign the Declaration of Independence was to commit an act of treason – and the punishment for treason was death. To publicly accuse George III of “repeated injuries and usurpations,” to announce that Americans were therefore “Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown,” was a move fraught with danger – so much so that the names of the signers were kept secret for six months
They were risking everything, and they knew it. That is the meaning of the Declaration’s soaring last sentence:
“And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm Reliance on the Protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.”
Most of the signers survived the war; several went on to illustrious careers.
Two of them became presidents of the United States, and among the others were future vice presidents, senators, and governors. But not all were so fortunate.
Nine of the 56 died during the Revolution, and never tasted American independence.
Five were captured by the British.
Eighteen had their homes – great estates, some of them – looted or burnt by the enemy.
Some lost everything they owned.
Two were wounded in battle.
Two others were the fathers of sons killed or captured during the war.
“Our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.” It was not just a rhetorical flourish.
We recognize John Hancock’s signature, but who ever notices the names beneath his? William Ellery, Thomas Nelson, Richard Stockton, Button Gwinnett, Francis Lewis – to most of us, these are names without meaning.
But each represents a real human being, some of whom paid dearly “for the support of this Declaration” and American independence.”
This Independence Day prayer offers and is designed to encourage Christian celebrations of freedom, both spiritual and physical, for the Fourth of July holiday.
“Dear Lord, There is no greater feeling of liberation than to experience this freedom from sin and death that you have provided for me through Jesus Christ. Today my heart and my soul are free to praise you. For this I am very thankful.
On this Independence Day I am reminded of all those who have sacrificed for my freedom, following the example of your Son, Jesus Christ. Let me not take my freedom, both physical and spiritual, for granted. May I always remember that my freedom was purchased with a very high price. My freedom cost others their very lives.
Lord, today, bless those who have served and continue to give their lives for my freedom. With favor and bounty meet their needs and watch over their families.
Help me to live my life in a way that glorifies you, Lord. Give me the strength to be a blessing in someone else’s life today, and grant me the opportunity to lead others into the freedom that can be found in knowing Christ. Amen” – Author Unknown
Many before us have made personal and ultimate sacrifices. Many are making them today In the future, more will step forward in the future to protect all our freedom.
As you gather with your family and friends on this Independence Day weekend, take a moment before you eat to give thanks to God for our freedom. Do not rush your prayer. Say the prayer with thanksgiving. Pray for our leaders and those who serve to keep us free from tyranny. Thank the Lord for what he has given us to help others.
Stay focused in the King and his blessings, Bill
