William D. McNaul

William D. McNaul, age 93 of 1 Longsdorf Way, Carlisle, PA and formerly of Tyrone, died Monday, July 28, 2008 at the Carlisle Regional Medical Center. He was born April 20, 1915 in Coalport, the son of Blaine R. and Margaret Davidson McNaul. In 1937 he married Cleo Milligan. They enjoyed 61 years together. Cleo preceded him in death May 12, 1998. He will be sadly missed by their two daughters, Eleanor Hartman of Boiling Springs and Gretchen (Harry) Fisher of Rochester, NY; five grandchildren – William (Kyong) Hartman, Elizabeth (Joseph) Knouse, Mark and Alex Fisher, Eleanor (Andrew) Olander, and six great-grandchildren – William, Abigail and Joseph Knouse Jr., Annette and Adam Hartman and Lauren Olander. He was the last of his immediate family.
Mr. McNaul was a member of the First English Lutheran Church. He was a 1934 graduate of Tyrone High School. Early in his career, Mr. McNaul worked at the McNaul Brothers Meat Packing Company in Coalport and later owned and operated his own grocery store on Logan Avenue in Tyrone. He also worked as a produce manager at the Acme in Tyrone, as well as a custodian and bus driver for the Tyrone Area School District. Mr. McNaul retired from Westvaco Paper Mill after many years of service. He was a member of Tyrone F&AM No. 494, the Jaffa Shrine, and the Scottish rite, Valley of Altoona. As a boy he was a Sea Scout and basketball player. He was a member of the Cayman Campers Club of Treasure Lake since 1984 where he was an avid fisherman and camper. For over 30 years he had served on the Tyrone Area School Board. Lovingly known by many as Pop-pop, he will be remembered for his selflessness, honesty, and integrity.
Funeral services for William D. McNaul will be Saturday, August 2, 2008 at 3 p.m. at the Richard H. Searer Funeral Home Inc. with Reverend Norman E. Huff officiating. Interment will be in Blair Memorial Park at the convenience of the family. Friends may call the funeral home on Saturday from 2 to the 3 p.m. hour of service.

Thelma S. Givler

Thelma S. Givler, 88, of 1451 Greendale Road, Tyrone, died Tuesday evening July 29, 2008 at Tyrone Hospital.
She was born April 2, 1920 in Akron, Ohio, a daughter of Oliver Porter and Dora Elizabeth (Hildebrand) Stonebraker. On May 26, 1948 in Tyrone she married George M. Givler. He died October 16, 1996.
Surviving are two sons, Michael H. of York, Gregory L. and wife Donna of Tyrone and a grandson Shawn Michael. She was preceded in death by a sister Hope Grove and a brother Vance Hildebrand.
Mrs. Givler retired in 1978 from Bell Telephone, Altoona as an operator following 32 years service. She was previously employed with the Civil Service Commission at the Pentagon, Washington D.C.
She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Tyrone, Tyrone Hospital Auxiliary, AARP, Howard Gardner American Legion Auxiliary, Bell Telephone Pioneers and the 70th Tank Battalion Association.
Thelma was a longtime supporter of Tyrone High School football. She enjoyed western movies and sitting on her front porch.
Funeral services will be held Saturday August 2, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Feller Memorial Home with Pastor Barry Neal officiating. Interment will follow at Blair Memorial Park. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of services.

From The Stacks A column about the Tyrone-Snyder Public

Today is the last day of July. August and the inevitable end to summer leisure looms just around the corner. Students and parents scurry to find summer treasures to enjoy before returning to the school year routine. Looking for something to do to enjoy those last few days of leisure? Why not visit the library?
This week marks the end of the Summer Reading Program for patrons through ninth grade. Saturday, August 2, at 5 p.m. is the deadline for turning in your completed reading logs. The closing ceremonies and award program takes place next Thursday, August 7, at 6:30 p.m. That doesn’t mean there is no reason to visit the library during the remainder of August.
Stop by to browse the new books, leaf through the magazines, and survey the audio books available to borrow. Players of all ages are invited to check out the library Wii or the video games available for borrowing. Do your summer surfing in our computer lab with recently upgraded connection speed. If you’re looking for books to take home without worrying about a due date, a Used Book Sale is scheduled for the week of August 11. Come search the tables for precious books you can read and re-read. Look for that elusive cook book with that special recipe you’ve been seeking. Discover the missing book needed to complete the series you’ve been collecting.
The following policies are in place for this book sale:
• All recently published hardback books $1 each.
• All other hardback books $.50 each.
• All paperback books $.25 each.
Other special events to look forward to include:
• Interactive anti-tobacco presentation entitled “Squash The Tobacco Bug”; play Tobacco Free Earth Bingo for prizes on Tuesday, August 5.
• EXPRESS YOURSELF SUMMER ART CAMP scheduled for August 11-15 for those 8 – 12 years. One week of exploring the arts: Theatre, Painting, Poetry, Sculpture, & Dance/Movement. Call 684-1133 to register.
• The first ever Tyrone-Snyder Public Library Tail Gate before the Back Yard Brawl between Tyrone and Bellwood-Antis football teams, Friday, August 29. Watch the paper for details to follow.
• The 4th annual Longaberger Basket Bingo to be held at the Bald Eagle Fire Hall on Sunday, September 7.

Metz & Associates joins area businesses as corporate sponsor of Tyrone Hospital golf event

The Tyrone Hospital Development Council has announced that Metz & Associates has joined Community Pharmacy, DelGrosso Foods and DelGrosso Amusement Park as a corporate sponsor of the Development Council’s golf tournament.
Randy Miles, Sr, Chairman of the Development Council said the Council is both pleased and honored to have this level of support from the business community.
“It is exciting to have three recognized business leaders in our area, step forward to demonstrate their support for Tyrone Hospital.”
DelGrosso Amusement Park and DelGrosso Foods have been corporate sponsors of the golf event since its inception several years ago. Community Pharmacy and Metz & Associates, who have also been regular contributors both increased their support this year to the corporate sponsor level.
The Development Council will hold its annual golf event to benefit Tyrone Hospital on Wednesday August 27 at Sinking Valley Country Club.
The golf tournament is the Development Council’s largest annual fund raiser.
Funds raised via the golf tournament will be used to help pay for a renovation project that will make improvements to areas within Tyrone Hospital’s emergency room and to the patient registration area. The improvements will provide greater patient privacy.
The renovation will cost a minimum of $40,000.
Miles said the Council has extended the sign – up deadline for sponsors and golfer to August 13.
“We continue to receive inquiries about the event and want to give people every opportunity to sign-up,” said Miles.
Miles said he also wanted to remind the community that you do not have to be a golfer to support Tyrone Hospital through this event. People who want to support Tyrone Hospital thru this event can do so by signing on as a golfer, sponsor, by making a monetary donation in any amount, or by attending the BBQ held in conjunction with the event for either lunch or dinner.
The donation to attend the BBQ is $20 per person.
Sponsorship opportunities are as follows; corporate sponsor $1,500, course sponsor $750, tee sponsor $300. The fee for a team of four golfers is $300 and morning and afternoon flights are available.

Sylvester L. ‘Beanie’ Kovac

Sylvester L. “Beanie” Kovac, 70, of 424 S. 1st St., Bellwood, died Monday, July 28, 2008 at Bon Secours Hospital.
He was born November 18, 1937 in Roseboom, NY to the late Thomas and Minnie (Williams) Kovac. He married Judith A. Baker, who survives at home.
Also surviving are a son, Shawn L. Kovac and a sister, Christine Klinger of Altoona. A grandson, Aaron J. Kovac of Everett.
He was preceded in death by sisters Mary Andrews, Marjorie L. Hardy and Thomasina Nagle, and one brother, Thomas Kovac, Jr.
Mr. Kovac was a graduate of Bellwood-Antis High School in 1957. He was a US Marine Corp veteran as a Plane Captain. He retired from SKF as a Quality Control Auditor.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 30, 2008 at the Vincent J. Good Funeral Parlor, Bellwood.
Funeral services will be held at the funeral parlor on Wednesday, July 30, 2008 at 8 p.m. with Pastor Peggy Bonsell officiating.
Interment will be at Logan Valley Cemetery.
Contribution can be made to the American Diabetes Association.
