Spring 2008 Tyrone Soccer registration is currently being held at the Northern Blair County Recreation Center through February 29.
Interested individuals are encouraged to stop by the rec center to sign up.
After February 29, an additional $20 late fee will be charged and players will not be guaranteed a spot on a team.
The rec center is open Monday through Thursday from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
Participants must have been born between August 1, 1993 and January 31, 2003.
The cost is $25 per child or $20 for each sibling.
The season runs from April 6 to June 1.

Final registration for Tyrone Youth Baseball Association will be held Tuesday, February 26 from 6 to 8 p.m.. at Epworth Manor.
The sign-ups are for major, minor and tee ball baseball leagues.
Any boy or girl born between May 1, 1995 and April 30, 2003 is eligible to play.
The cost is $35 per child or $45 per family.
To register, an original copy of the child’s birth certificate is required.
Anyone who did not turn in last year’s uniform should bring it to registration.

Sign-ups for the 2008 baseball season in Bellwood and Antis Township will be held Friday, February 29 and Saturday, March 1 for Little League, minor league, t-ball and teener league.
Registration will be held at the Myers Elementary School lobby on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.

Senator John H. Eichelberger, Jr. (R-30) today announced that he will be holding an informal town hall meeting to listen to constituent concerns and views regarding state government issues.
The meeting is set for Tuesday, March 4th from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Tyrone Senior Center located at 505 Third Street, Tyrone, PA 16686.
“State government officials need to be active and involved in their communities to understand the needs and concerns of their constituents. That’s why I am continuing to hold town hall meetings on a regular basis,” said Eichelberger. “I encourage everyone in the community to attend and participate in this meeting.”

Mrs. Jamison’s K4 class created an igloo out of milk jugs. Over 230 milk jugs were used to create the igloo. An ice fishing pond was created with extra milk jugs that were collected. The igloo and fishing pond coincide with their unit on Polar animals and the arctic. Tyrone Area School District is one of a few districts in the area that offers its residents free pre-school. Tyrone Elementary Early Childhood Center is made possible by federal and state grants, Title I and Pennsylvania Pre-K Counts. These grants are used to provide high quality early education to children in the center. Research shows that children who have high quality early childhood experiences are more likely to be prepared for school, be better students and graduate high school. (Courtesy photo)

The Tyrone Hospital medical staff donated $1,000 to the Tyrone Area Community Organization (TACO). The donation will support a variety of projects that TACO organizes each year to benefit the community. Events TACO organizes each year include an Easter egg hunt, fishing rodeo and a Halloween parade. TACO also issues a Distinguished Service Award, and a Boss of the Year Award annually. Diabetic emergency
On Feb. 15, state police reported Helen C. Orlowsky, 86, Altoona was traveling on the southbound ramp to I-99 in Antis Twp. when she became ill due to a diabetic emergency. Orlowsky traveled off the roadway and onto the west shoulder where her vehicle struck a dirt embankment.

Stolen vehicle
State police reported on Feb. 17 that a gold 2006 Chevrolet Uplander, PA registration GLT-6392 was stolen from the residence of Harlyn James Collier, 77, of RD4 Box 36C, Tyrone. The vehicle was stolen as it was parked under Collier’s car port at his residence. Anyone with any information regarding the vehicle and or the persons involved in the theft of the vehicle is asked to call the Pennsylvania State Police at Hollidaysburg at 814-696-6100.

Two vehicle crash
On Feb. 18 along SR 220 and 3rd St. in Snyder Twp., state police reported a two vehicle crash as BilliJo Green, 37, Tyrone attempted to make a left turn from a side street along SR 220. Green pulled directly into the path of a vehicle driven by Janis Shomo, 61, Tyrone. The front of Shomo’s vehicle struck the driver’s side door of Green’s vehicle. Both drivers were wearing seat belts. Green suffered minor injuries, and Shomo was not injured.

Criminal mischief
State police reported on Feb. 19 an act of criminal mischief at the Teaberry St. development in Snyder Twp. Andrew J. Boyles, 22, Altoona broke a glass door window and put a hole in a wall at an apartment rented by Cherrie L. Grassmyer, 20, Tyrone. Boyles will be cited for criminal mischief at District Magisterial Justice Fred Miller’s office in Tyrone.
