The Tyrone Junior Varsity Baseball Team hosted the Bellefonte Red Raiders JV team on Monday afternoon.
The contest was a very competitive venue through the 1st three innings of play as Tyrone was leading the contest by a score of 2-1.
In fact, Tyrone’s starting pitcher, Derrick Dasher had allowed only two hits and one run through three complete innings.
However in the top of the fourth inning, the Bellefonte shortstop Scharnholy, crushed a solo home run over the left-center field fence. Then came another hit, several walks and several errors and all of a sudden the score had Bellefonte leading by a score of 6-2.
The Golden Eagles would not score another run for the remainder of the game. Several pitching changes took place and in the sixth inning the Red Raiders put the game away scoring six runs on four hits and four walks allowed by Tyrone pitchers. The final score was Bellefonte 13, Tyrone 2 after six innings of play.
Many might find it hard to find something positive out of a game you lose by 11 runs, but one significant improvement that the coaches witnessed for the Golden Eagles during the game was their much needed improvement in the hitting department.
“Even though, we only had five hits for the game, we had better contact at the plate and Bellefonte players made four or five outstanding defensive plays taking hits away from us.
“With the exception of a few innings, our pitching help up as well with Derrick Dasher, Korry Cowher, and Trevor Jackson all giving us some quality work. A majority of the Bellefonte starters were part of the 13/14 year-old 2007 VFW State Championship Team and through three innings of play we were playing as well or better than them. “ Coach Jackson stated.
The Junior Varsity team will see its next action Wednesday at home against Bald Eagle Area at 4 p.m.. Bald Eagle Area’s 2007 Varsity Team was the 2007 AA State Champions!
