Tyrone hosted a strong Bald Eagle Area girls softball squad at the hilltop field at the Harry K. Sickler Athletic Complex on Thursday afternoon.
The Bald Eagle girls proved to be rude guests, scoring nine times in the first inning, on the way to a 27-2 win, before the Tyrone Lady Eagles even had a chance to bat. BEA has been in the last two district finals and was the Class AA state champion in 2006.
Shaking off a season of problems at the plate, Tyrone scored twice in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, Amber Miller singled and Ariane Miller walked to put a pair of runners on the bases. Teanna Kobuck reached on a Bald Eagle error to load the bases. Tyrone catcher Lindsay Christine got a clutch base hit, singling home both Amber Miller and Ariane Miller.
That however, would be the extent of the Tyrone scoring offense for the afternoon.
Bald Eagle Area then score 17 runs in the top of the fourth to make a mockery of the situation.
“We had a poor first inning but did manage to score two runs in the bottom of the third,” said Tyrone softball coach Lois Loncher.
Brooke Garbinsky came on in the fourth in relief for Tyrone starter Ariane Miller.
Elizabeth Hackett struck out eight and walked three to pick up the win for BEA.
Tyrone has shown improvement. When the two teams met at Wingate in the first game of the season, Hackett pitched a three-inning perfect game against the Lady Eagles, retiring all nine batters she faced, seven on strikeouts.
Tyrone (0-7) will play Bellwood-Antis (3-6) today at Bellwood. Bellwood-Antis and the Lady Eagles were involved in a real battle in the first game between these two Backyard Brawl opponents, before B-A pulled out a 15-13 victory in eight innings.
