Toms Run Golf Resort was the sight for this year’s Western Regional golf championships. Fifty players took to the first tee for a 9 a.m. shotgun start, trying to play well enough to advance to the state tourney to be held at Heritage Hills Resort in York Pa.
Tyrone’s Jimmy Ferguson advanced to the state event with a solid fourth Place finish. Jimmy posted 37-34- for a one-under par total of 71. I started slow, 3 putting the 3rd. and 5th. Hole, then I missed #6 green and bogeyed to go to +3 on the round.
“I was a little off early with my putting, but became comfortable as the day went on,” said Ferguson. “I birdied the 7th and 9th holes and played pretty well the rest of the day, I’m excited to be going to states and have a goal for a top five finish. Winning is the mind set, but top 5 would be pretty good as well.”
“Jimmy played well just as he has most of the season,” said Jimmy’s dad and Tyrone golf coach Greg Ferguson. “He hit 16 greens in regulation, early in the round he had two 3-putt greens, he found himself three over after six holes, but came back really strong. He had a couple of really good birdie looks, but rolled the ball over the edges. As I have been saying all season, he is just solid, he hits fairways, and greens, he doesn’t get worked up if things aren’t going well. He stays patient and keeps moving forward, he overcomes things and makes the best of what his game is for that day. He will do well at the State event. There are a dozen really good players there that are capable of winning the state event, he is one of the guys that can win. With solid golf with a break or two, he can bring home the state title, he’s definitely good enough.
Bellwood-Antis senior Tom Trexler failed to advance. Tom posted a score of 82 with the final qualifying score 77.
The state tournament will host 48 of PA’S top players competing in the 36-hole event. It is estimated 1500 plus student athletes began at the local sectionals with a goal of advancing to the state tourney.
