Chief Beachem expresses his thanks to Kristen Rhodes and the Tyrone Church of the Brethren for their successful efforts to raise money for the department’s anti-drug efforts. This is the third year that the Chief has been presented with funds from the church to help the community. |
The Tyrone Church of the Brethren, for the third year in a row, hosted a Summer Praise Program aimed at teaching local children songs of praise, choral skills, stage presence and an appreciation of worship. The additional objective was to raise money for the Tyrone Police Department to use in their drug prevention efforts.
Last year, the Program, which was the brain child of Kristen Rhodes, the Church of the Brethren’s Music Minister, raised a little over $2,000 towards those efforts. This year, the goal was to raise $2,000 or more. That goal was, in fact, surpassed in grand style. After all the sponsors, advertisers and individual contributors had graciously supported the Program, the total raised came to $2,107.
The concert ,which was held on the evening of August 24, was well attended and the children’s efforts were well received. The theme for the evening was “The Lord’s Army” and all the children and the adult praise singers were decked out in camouflage T-shirts and khaki pants. Some of the songs performed were ‘Lift Up Your Hands’, ‘Facts Are Facts’ and ‘So Long Self’.
One of the most delightful and most anticipated parts of the evening was the ‘Armor of God’ fashion show. Several of the children wore glamorous, and sometimes wild, outfits while drawing focus to the main fashion accessories such as the ‘Belt of Truth’, the ‘Shield of Faith’ and the ‘Helmet of Salvation’. The Adult Praise Team of the church also lent their talents, singing ‘Taking A Stand’. They also joined the children for the closing number ‘At His Feet’. A wonderful time was had by all.
The check for $2,107 was presented to Chief Beachem, Officer Lutz and the newest addition to the force, Officer Vilo, at the Tyrone Church of the Brethren on September 28. It was noted that Officer Vilo has the coldest and wettest nose on the force, but that’s okay because he is the new drug/patrol dog that the Chief was hoping for.
