This weekend, June 23 and 24, marks 75 years of discovery at Lincoln Caverns and Whisper Rocks in Huntingdon.
Discovered in May of 1930 during the construction of US Route 22, the cave was originally owned by Harry B. Stewart, and opened to the public on June 25, 1931. It was later purchased in the spring of 1932 by Myron Dunlavy, Sr. and has remained in his family for 75 years.
The special schedule of events and activities for this anniversary weekend include historic interpretive tours of Lincoln Caverns and Whisper Rocks.
Tickets are on sale at historic prices, $2.65 each, 75 percent off regular admission price.
The schedule also includes various activities throughout the days. At 11 a.m. there will be a workshop for all ages called “Bats of Pennsylvania”. There will also be bat crafts for children.
At noon and 2 p.m. a presentation will be given entitled, “Introduction to Speleology”, which is a new power point presentation for all ages featuring cave formation, types of speleothems, cave life and conservation information.
“Caves and Karst”, a workshop for everyone, will be presented at 1 p.m. Participants will learn all about this significant landform along with environmental concerns that affect everyone. A cave craft will also be provided for children.
The caverns’ most popular workshop, “Fossils”, will be held at 3 p.m. including a fossil cast and fossil hunt for children.
At 4 p.m. will be Junior Cave Explorer with Kids Cave Crawl. Hear about caving adventures and safe caving. Also, participants will try the cavers’ squeezebox and Kids Cave Crawl simulated cave.
Everyone is invited to hike the nature trails, look over the campgrounds, use the picnic facilities and browse in Raystown Country’s largest gift shop.

Lincoln Caverns is located directly on US 22 (William Penn Highway), three miles west of Huntingdon.
The caves open daily at 9 a.m. The last tour leaves at 5 p.m. through June 30. July 1 through Labor Day, the last tour leaves at 6 p.m.
