Title: Traveling the Main Line Canals
Description: The Blair County Genealogical Society Speaker on September 17, 2009 at 7:00 P.M. will be Pennsylvania Humanities Council Speaker Jan Kinney. The Society is located at 431 Scotch Valley Road, Hollidaysburg, Pa. 16648 and is open to the public. There is no charge and the library is accessable to the handicap also.

Jan Kinney is a long time residence of Altoona. As a child Jan loved listening and reading stories. This led her to become a High School Librarian. Jan heard her fist professional storytelling at the age of 45, and then this became her passion to tell stories. She has been a featured storyteller and official master of ceremonies at the Corn Island Storytelling Festival in Louisville, Kentucky several times. She has told her stories to audiences throughout the state of Pennsylvania. Her story is of a front porch style and is easy listening and they are always fresh and rich.
Jan is a traditional storyteller and use different techniques.

Jan has earned E.A.R.S. Special Storytelling Award, and also received the Hollidaysburg Alumni’s Distinguished Educator Award. She has produced 5 Storytelling CDs and a book to go along with one of the CDs.

Jan will be speaking on traveling on the Main Line Canal. You will be able to imagine what it would be like to be traveling on the Canal System. Imagine the sights and sounds as you go throughout the state of Pennsylvania. The conversation of men and women that rode the boats and those that worked on the Canal System. Catch a glimpse of history that occurred over 100 years ago. The Canal System in Pennsylvania mainly ran from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh and Hollidaysburg was a stopping place for the boats.

Bring the family for this program is for the old as well as children. Stories of days gone by are always a great way to learn of the past. The stories will tell us about our ancestors and their way of living on the canals. History will come alive in these stories that will be told this night. Come, enjoy the evening with Altoona’s Jan Kinney, and learn of the past.
