Jeremy Walsh and Samantha Putt both earned gold medal awards, and the team from Bellwood-Antis High School placed second at the State FFA Land Use and Management Contest held recently at Penn State University.
Walsh placed second overall, Putt placed fourth overall, and Zachary Doyle placed thirteenth, earning a silver medal award in the contest. Seventy-four individuals and sixteen teams from across Pennsylvania participated in the event.
The team of Doyle, Putt, and Walsh placed second as a team in the contest, trailing first place winner Cowanesque Valley by only 14 points out of 1,000.
Students participating in this competition are required to display their abilities in evaluating land sites based upon their soil characteristics. They were also expected to prescribe the most appropriate land use at each site, as well as select the best agricultural practices for soil and water conservation.
The Land Use and Management Contest was one of thirty different events held during FFA Activities Week at Penn State University June 12 through 14. Over 1,400 FFA members and advisors attended this event, including Jim Mackereth, Bellwood-Antis agriculture teacher and FFA Advisor.
