ALTOONA–Matt Brooks drove in five runs and pitched three solid innings of relief to help Tyrone Legion hold off Park Furniture in a 15-7 victory.
Tyrone jumped out to an early 9-0 lead by scoring five times in the first and pushing four more across in the second. Aaron Cunningham drove in three of the first nine runs with a pair of singles.
Donnie Hunter started for Tyrone Legion, pitching the first four innings to pick up the win, then turned the pitching chores over to Brooks who took it the rest of the way, striking out five and not walking a batter in relief.
Park Furniture battled back from their nine-run deficit to close to within three, 9-6 after four innings, but Tyrone Legion responded with six scores in the fith and sixth innings to provide some insurance.
“We had a lot of guys playing out of position today, but everyone that was here really stepped up and helped us get a very important win over a team we’re going to be fighting with for the last couple playoff spots,” Tyrone Legion manager Mike Boytim said. “Matt Brooks did a great job as the cleanup hitter and finishing off the game on the mound. Donnie Hunter found out he was the starting pitcher right before the game, but he answered the challenge and gave us the opportunity to win.”
Brooks and Aaron Cunningham led the way on offense for Tyrone Legion, with three hits each, while Hunter and Mike Romano collected two hits apiece.
Mike Shedlock, Mike Wentz and Matt McMurray each had two hits for Park Furniture.
The Legion will travel to Mansion Park today to take on Cox Division leaders, ReMax Realty in the second of a string of eight games in eight days for the team.
