The undefeated Tyrone Golden Eagle Marching Band continued their path to excellence this past weekend at the annual Tournament of Bands competition held at Conemaugh Township High School.
The band took home awards for Best Music, Best Marching and Best Color Guard and Majorettes en route to another first place finish.
Their score of 81.6 bettered the second place group by nearly two points and catapulted the Eagles to the highest overall seed amongst bands in their division from Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Even more notably, the band has not been outscored during the season by any Regional Band, regardless of group size, when performing at the same competition.
In addition to their overall success, the band boasts an undefeated instrument line that has not lost the award for Best Music or Best Marching since beginning competition on September 20 in Milton, Pennsylvania.
The Color Guard and Majorette squads have also remained unbeaten by taking home three consecutive awards for Best Auxiliary unit.
This year’s show is entitled “What is Art?” The show features several well-known jazz standards including, “Georgia on My Mind”, “It Don’t Mean a Thing if it Ain’t Got That Swing” and “Moondance”.
The band is under the direction of Mark Murphy and Tom Verzella, with percussion arrangements by Cecil Fish, and color guard work designed by Tricia McNelis and Tim Schaul. The students are led on the field by drum majors Dan Kilgus and Katie Spangler, and guard captain Alexis Henderson.
The Tyrone Band has a long standing tradition of excellence. In addition to their competitive performances, the band performs at all home and away football games, local parades, and numerous school events.
The band will look to continue their success next weekend at the annual Chapter Championship competition held at Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s Miller Stadium on Saturday night.
