Earlier this month “Run for our Youth” was held to benefit the Tyrone track and field and cross country programs, as well as, Joshua House.
Events for the day included a 10K run, 5K run/walk, “Run for the Gold” youth one mile race and a kids’ lollipop fun run.
Races were divided into age categories as well as male and female divisions.
The start and finish is located at the Tyrone Area High School. The course loop is relatively flat with one steep hill for about two blocks in the 10K run. During the 5K race there will be times given at the one and two mile markers. Times will be given at mile markers one through five during the 10K run. There will be water stops along the course for both races.
The “Run for the Gold” youth one mile race commemorates “Emily Ingle Day”. Emily is the only female athlete from Tyrone to win a gold medal at the state level in any sport. This race is for youth ages 10 to 18 years of age. It is a one mile run, or four laps around the track.
While in it’s first year, organizers hope to make “Run for our Youth” an annual event.
This year’s overall winners included were Rich Stever – 19:03 and Olivia Stever – 25:20 and the 10K overall winners were Doug Hoover – 38:02 and Misty Reid – 47:19.
The race was previously a very popular event, at one time sponsored by the Tyrone YMCA.
This year’s event was a great success and organizers said they received many compliments from runners who were happy to see the race back.
The children’s races were well attended and organizers were excited as the purpose is to try to introduce kids to running, exercise and healthy lifestyles at an earlier age. And, hopefully some will carry that onto high school and the track and cross country programs.
