Prior to the groundbreaking ceremony at Myers Elementary School in Bellwood earlier this month, the school board recognized three fourth grade students. The students were named this year’s winners of the annual fourth grade poetry contest and were each presented with a $100 savings bond. The savings bonds are provided for the winners each year by former Myers Elementary principal, Jim Bilka. Participants in the contest are asked to choose a poem and the top three performers are then presented with the prizes. All the students did a wonderful job this year, but the field was narrowed down to three, including, from left: Sarah Winesickle, Abbey Turnbaugh and Brittany Buschle. The girls also performed their poems in front of those gathered at the groundbreaking ceremony. (The Daily Herald/Amanda Golden)
