For the 22nd season, Tyrone’s summer concert series will soon be getting underway. The Tyrone Regional Arts Council will once again be sponsoring a number of concerts, along with two family movie nights for area residents to enjoy.
The original series, Summer Sundays at Reservoir Park’s amphitheater, has been expanded to eight concerts that will feature the music of the big bands, Dixieland, rock, Irish, gospel, and country.
The summer concert series has now been expanded based on audience surveys that has repeatedly commented on how nice it would be to have programs that ran through Labor Day. Based on the available funding, eight concerts have been scheduled through August 28.
Beginning on July 8, the energetic music of Dixieland, Ragtime and the Blues will open the series as the Summit City Saints Dixieland Band performs.
On July 15, The ‘Emmanuel Baptist Church Praise Team’ will take the stage and present contemporary Gospel music.
There will be a completely different twist to Celtic music on July 22. ‘Full Kilt’, a local group that puts a Celtic flare on rock and roll standards will perform.
The seventeen-piece ‘Big Band Sound, Inc.’, will bring back the glory days of the forties with that incomparable big band sound on July 29.
On August 5, the consummate performer ‘Zupe’ will entertain with his special stage show.
For those who enjoy music from the big band era, The ‘Lou Stein Band’ will perform many big band standards and vocal favorites on August 12. From Johnstown, by way of New York City and Las Vegas, the Lou Stein Band will feature musicians from across the country.
Tyrone’s Irish heritage will be featured on August 19 when the ‘Michael O’Brian Band’ takes the stage, bringing a piece of the homeland to the Park.
The series will conclude on August 28 when Tyrone musician Clayton Hoover, a talented Tyrone Area High School student, entertains with classic country numbers along with the ‘Local Country Band’.
Summer Sunday concerts begin at 6 p.m. and in the event of rain will be held at the First English Lutheran Church on the corner of Logan Avenue and 13th Street.
Fun Fridays will feature two concert and movie nights. These events will be held downtown at the M&T parking lot on 10th Street, next to Wendy’s Joybeans. The concerts will begin at 8 p.m. Following the concerts, a family outdoor movie is scheduled to begin at dusk. Family Fun Movie Nights will be held on July 27 and August 17. In the event of rain, movies will be held in the Emmanuel Baptist Church on 10th Street, across from Dance Fusion.
This summer’s concert series is made possible by a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and Tyrone Borough. Family Fun Movie Nights are made possible by a partnership with the Emmanuel Baptist Church.
