The Bellwood-Antis junior high football ran into a tough opponent in the Bishop Guilfoyle junior high Thursday at BG.
The Little Blue Devils extended their record to 4-1 with two late final-quarter scores to upend the Little Marauders 14-6 while handing BG their first loss in five contests.
Bishop Guilfoyle took the lead on a 22-yard pass play in the second quarter for the only scoring in the first three quarters.
With B-A blowing a golden opportunity on a fourth and goal, Bishop Guilfoyle gave the Blue Devils another chance. The B-A defense provided a terrific hit at the same time the BG ballcarrier was switching the ball to the other hand and recovered the resulting fumble.
Josh Kleinfelter scored on a one-yard run for Bellwood-Antis and Kyle Drost completed a pass to Troy Brunner for the two-point conversion and an 8-6 lead with just 1:17 to play. Tony DelGrosso then dashed 70 yards for the second score, after intercepting a Bishop Guilfoyle pass with four seconds left on the clock.
“If I coach another 30 years,” exclaimed a jubilant B-A coach Charlie Burch, “I will never see another finish like this one. We came out and played inspired football against a BG team that is really loaded, but until the final minutes, it looked like it would all be in vain. We kept BG bottled up pinning deep for most of the game with our defense and punts. Give Josh Kleinfelter a lot of credit, the score was all desire. He made a cut and stretched out as far as he could to get the ball into the endzone. The official took an extra moment to make extra sure, then signaled touchdown.”
