The Tyrone junior high football team improved their record to 5-1 in the Big 8 (5-2 overall) with a 16-6 win over Philipsburg-Osceola at Tyrone Gray Veterans Memorial Field on Thursday evening.
Little Golden Eagle quarterback Leonard Wilson led Tyrone to the win scoring a two-yard touchdown on a run in the first quarter, then throwing a 35-yard TD pass to Trey Brockett in the second quarter.
Wilson also accounted for two 2-pt. PATs as well, scoring the first on a run and passing to Brockett on the second.
Philipsburg-Osceola scored once in the third quarter, but the Tyrone defense limited the Little Mounties to just the one score.
Wilson rushed 10 times for 56 yards, Dustin Brown rushed 10 times for 40 yards and Heath Walk added 35 yards on seven carries. Wilson completed three of six passes for 55 yards, one TD and one interception. Trey Brockett had one reception for 35 yards and a TD and Bobby Snyder had two receptions for 20 yards.
On defense, Trey Brockett recovered a P-O fumble.
“This was a big game for us,” explained Tyrone coach Dan Plummer. “Especially after a tough loss last week where everything seemed to go against us. We couldn’t get any breaks to fall. With the win tonight, we are getting things back on the right track. I was really pleased with the guys today, especially our special teams. These kids did the job, Nate Woodring got us out of trouble when we had the ball deep in our own territory. He got off a tremendous punt that went 45 or 50 yards, just for example. Instead of being in our own territory, P-O had to start in their own part of the field, with a long way to go. They really had a great effort. I was also pleased with our mix on offense. We got a lot of running backs into the game and we were able to mix our passing game in with Leonard doing a good job in passing and our receivers doing their job too.. The defense bent, but didn’t break, doing what they had to.”
