Tyrone defeated Mount Union on Tuesday night in the opening round of the District Six volleyball playoffs.
The Lady Eagles advanced to the Class AA quarterfinals with wins in two straight games, 15-4, 15-9.
Stephanie Catich and Katie Whitby led the No. Six-seeded Golden Eagles with seven service points each. Lauren Haag had seven kills for the Lady Eagles and Amber DelBaggio had 21 assists in Tyrone’s first round win. Tyrone improves to 15-4 on the season, gaining a measure of revenge with two of their regular season losses to Mount Union both by close contests that went the full three games.
Jaime Endres led the Lady Trojans with six service points.
“We played a solid overall match,” said Tyrone coach Dave Eckberg. “We controlled the ball on our side and that allowed us to take some swings and play aggressively. Kristen Schleiden had some nice digs on defense. She’s one of the hardest workers on our team. Our service points were spread out pretty evenly, which means we were able to side out when we had to and get the ball back.”
Tyrone will travel to Richland High School on Thursday night, Oct. 31, to play Ligonier Valley in a District Six quarterfinal match. Match time is set for 6:30 p.m.
