Mr. Jesse N. Mengel, age 80, of Hollidaysburg died Saturday, April 19, 2008 at his home. He was born July 25, 1927 in Tyrone, the son of Charles R. and Jessie M. Neil Mengel. On February 4, 1956 at St. Mary’s Church, Altoona, he was married to Joyce Purcell who survives. Also surviving are three sons, Charles (Becky) Mengel, Clarksville, MD; James (Janet) Mengel, Berlin, MD and Neil (Sharon) Mengel, Grasonville, MD; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; one brother, Chester R. (Lenore) Mengel, Tyrone and one sister, Manita (Jack) Bowman, Corning, NY and many loved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, David G. Mengel and one sister, Aileen M. Crawford.
Mr. Mengel was a graduate of Tyrone High School, Class of 1945 and received his Bachelor of Arts from Penn State University in 1950. He had been employed by the Social Security Administration and later by the Health Care Finance Administration from which he retired in 1982. Following his high school graduation he served with the US Navy during World War II. He enjoyed working with his hands and doing construction projects and spending time with his family. He was a role model and inspiration to his entire family.
A private service followed by interment in Hollidaysburg Presbyterian Cemetery was held at the convenience of the family. A memorial service will be held at a date to be announced.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Richard H. Searer Funeral Home Inc., Tyrone.
