The Tyrone Merchants Association is actively involved in the upcoming holiday season. The members of the merchants association are holding the first annual ‘Christmas Contest,’ which is presently going on at participating local businesses in Tyrone.
The merchants wanted to hold a game for the community to bring people downtown and to get people to come into each business. The game is a mix between a scavenger hunt and answering trivia questions.
Rob Orr of Levine’s Shoe Fly and Carol Anderson of JoyBeans are the two Tyrone Merchants Association members who organized the contest.
The idea behind the contest is to draw people from the community to go into the participating businesses to gather the scavenger hunt items and to ask the business owner for the trivia question.
To be eligible to win the contest a person must collect all the items from each merchant, find the answers to all the merchant trivia questions, and take your items, trivia answers, name and phone number to either JoyBeans or Levine’s Shoe Fly before Dec. 21.
If both the items and answers have been completed correctly, the person will be entered into a drawing to win $500 worth of prizes.
The items and questions include:
• Warriors Mark Auto World-Warriors Mark Auto World folder–How many years does Dan Sprankle and Greg Hoover have in the car business?
• JoyBeans-5 coffee beans–What are the four basic ways we make coffee?
• Levine’s Show Fly-shoe horn–When did Morris Levine first come to Tyrone?
• Scents of Life-bag of scent chips–Who are the two teams that we sponsor?
• O’s Sew Shop-thread in a bag–What are the dimensions of a queen size quilt?
• Tyrone News Agency-Hallmark card–When is Monica Kost’s birthday?
• Gardner’s Candies-chocolate covered pretzels–How many years has Chet Geist given his wife a Valentine heart?
• LA Fitness-key holder–How many exercise balls are in the gym?
• Bakers Academy of Tae Kwon Do-pencil–What country did Tae Kwon Do originate?
• New Look Hair Salon-business card–What day did New Look open?
• Stultz and Brown Ford Mercury-sticker–Who is the Finance Manager at Stultz and Brown?
• Ace Hardware-magnet–What is the price on any stock water heater?
The drawing to declare the winner of the Christmas Contest will take place by the Friday before Christmas. The winner will receive a gift basket with at least a $20 gift certificate from each business that is participating.
Anderson said that she hopes there is a large response from the community with participation in the contest, because the merchants association would like to continue the contest annually.
“The game sheets are at each participating merchant, so you can go into those businesses and pick up the rules sheet and game sheet,” said Anderson. “You have to go to all of those businesses to get all the pieces if you want to be a winner.”
Anderson stated that the contest by the merchants association ties in with the Yuletyme Tyrone festivities because the businesses are all trying to do something to get people downtown.
“Events like the Soup Tasting Contest is a great thing before the parade, so hopefully while people are downtown for the parade they’ll go into the businesses and play the game as they’re down here,” Anderson said.
Only businesses that are involved with the Tyrone Merchants Association are participating in the scavenger hunt and trivia contest.
“I think that as people see the merchants association can be a help to each one of the small business owners, more people will join,” said Anderson. “It would be nice if we would have 100 percent of the merchants involved in Tyrone.”
The Tyrone Merchants Association urges the people in the community of Tyrone to come downtown and participate in the first annual Christmas Contest for enjoyment and to support our local businesses.
