After Dec. 9, Pennsylvania Avenue will never look the same.
That’s because one of the most recognized staplemarks of downtown Tyrone, The Daily Herald, is moving.
General Manager Chris Lash announced today that the office will soon be located at 1067 Pennsylvania Ave., the former Beneficial office that rests between the post office and Columbia Ancillary Service Inc.
“Since my arrival here in June, we’ve been touring numerous buildings looking for a new place to locate,” said Lash. “And I feel we couldn’t have found a better location that not only benefits our employees at The Herald, but our readers as well.”
The new building features an immense floor plan of more than 2,500-square feet that’s essential when moving a newspaper operation that has existed for more than a century. Above the office, three apartments will be used for storage.
The Daily Herald has been located at 1018 Pennsylvania Avenue so long, that the Borough named the street beside the current location Herald Street.
“As a group we are looking forward to the move,” said Daily Herald Editor John Harlow. “We have done a lot with the content of paper over the last couple months and now we are giving customers a nice place to visit.”
The office also contains several work areas that will allow separation of departments for more concentrated business interests. There is a small lobby and sitting are in the front and a small conference room in the rear of the building for meetings, interviews and to conduct office business.
“Now when you come in, you’re not all jammed up at the front door,” said Lash. “There’s plenty of room for seating and a nice smile waiting for you by Classified/Circulation Director Joyce Alley.”
Many things will remain the same. Readers can still purchase their daily paper from a machine out front and grab the areas widest-read shopper sheet in The Bargain Sheet. The microfilm will still be available for use Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
All phone numbers and e-mail addresses will remain the same, as will the employees: John Harlow, editor; Bob Miller, sports editor; Patty Hyde, advertisment representative; Kris Yaniello, reporter; G. Kerry Webster, reporter; Lash and Alley.
According to Lash, the move-in date is scheduled for Dec. 9 and The Herald will open its doors to residents on Tuesday for a small celebration. Lash said readers are welcome to stop by, have some coffee and doughnuts and register to win a subscription to the publication.
George “Scoop” Sample, publisher of The Daily Herald and Huntingdon Daily News, said the move will show readers in the Tyrone area the dedicated commitment of The Herald and its employees to community news.”
“Our progress and commitment to Tyrone has required us to find better quarters,” said Sample. “This is a commitment to the Tyrone community that we’re proud of; One of which we’ve been looking for for some time.”
