Tyrone traveled to Bellefonte on Tuesday night for a Mountain League Class AAA basketball game against the Lady Raiders of Bellefonte. The Lady Raiders lived up to their mascot’s name, upsetting the Tyrone girls when Megan Farrington nailed a buzzer-beater from just inside the foul line to lift Bellefonte to a stunning 58-57 victory over the Lady Eagles.
Bellefonte notched a two-point lead with a 16-14 first quarter margin and carried that margin (30-28) into the locker room at halftime with the teams each scoring 14 points in the second quarter.
Tyrone tried to put the Lady Raiders away, jumping up by five with a 20-13 third quarter scoring margin. With a 48-43 lead, Tyrone was unable to hold the advantage in the end however, thanks to Farrington’s last second heroics.
The Lady Eagles’ Amber DelBaggio hit a running layup with what Tyrone coach Jim Swaney thought was one second remaining in the game to put his Eagles up 57-56. The officials put three seconds up on the clock however, and Farrington got the inbounds pass and raced up the court for her game-winning bucket.
“They ran a nice play,” Swaney said. “She made a nice play at the end.”
Joanna Turner led Tyrone with 19 points, Marie DelBaggio added 15 and Amber DelBaggio had 10. Farrington led all scorers with a game-high 25.
“This was a game we were supposed to win,” lamented Swaney. “If you’re going to have a good year, you have to beat the teams you’re supposed to beat. But give Bellefonte credit, they played well. I just think our intensity was not where we wanted it to be.”
Tyrone, who falls to 6-5 on the season overall and 3-3 in Mountain League play, hosts Philipsburg-Osceola on Friday, Jan. 10 with junior varsity action set for 6. p. and the varsity to follow at 7:30.
