The staff at Shear Magic located at 958 Pennsylvania Avenue in Tyrone have welcomed a new member to its team, hair stylist, Sherry Derman.
Derman is a native of Tyrone, and she has been cutting hair for 13 years at the Hairloft by Charles in State College. Derman decided she wanted to work some place closer to home, and so proprietor of Shear Magic, Chris Walters, offered her a position. Derman has been a new member of the staff for two weeks.
“I was born here, and I traveled back and forth to State College for almost 15 years. I just got tired of the trip,” said Derman of the reason for her decision to work in Tyrone.
Derman enjoys every aspect of the hair styling business. She keeps herself up-to-date on the latest trends and styles by enrolling in seminars that cover such topics as: special cutting classes, razor clippers and men’s cutting classes. Her favorite is razor cutting. By working at the Hairloft by Charles, she had the opportunity to meet the famous hair stylist Graham Webb.
She is grateful for the opportunity to have worked in State College but is glad to be working back home in Tyrone. Derman enjoys talking and laughing with her clients and the people with whom she works.
“I like the interaction with people, and everybody that you meet is different from the last person,” said Derman.
Many of her clients from the State College area are traveling to Tyrone to see Derman and to get their hair cut by her. Also, many of her friends from the Tyrone area who couldn’t travel to the State College area now have the opportunity to come see her at Shear Magic.
“I want those of you that couldn’t come to State College to come see me here,” she said.
Derman feels like she has come full circle and that she has finally returned to her roots. Ironically, the building where Shear Magic is located is where Derman spent much of her childhood. Her grandmother lived in the same building or close to it, and Derman would visit her often.
“I did spend the first years of my life on this block,” she said.
Derman wants to thank her husband Larrie and their two kids, Debbie and Larrie II, for all of their support over the past 15 years of her career. She feels they have helped and supported her along the way. Also, she wants to send her prayers and support to her nephew, Robert Mertiff who is currently serving in the U. S. Military.
“I’m waiting to give him a good haircut,” joked Derman on Mertiff’s return.
Proprietor Chris Walters is thrilled to have Derman working at Shear Magic along with Kim Cowher who has worked there for more than two years.
“I believe Sherry will be a great asset to the salon,” said Walters. “She’s a great hair stylist as well as a great person to work with.”
Shear Magic offers a variety of services including: perms, hair color, facial waxing, updos, braids, a tanning bed, high and low lights, ear piercing and manicures. It is open Monday through Saturday, and walk-ins are welcome. The number is 684-3255.
