The Tyrone Hospital and the office of Thomas O’Brien, M.D., Women’s Health Center of Tyrone are teaming up in a few weeks to ensure better medical attention to the female section of the Northern Blair County population.
May 11 through the 17 is designated as National Women’s Health Week and both healthcare providers have planned a ton of event to coincide with the week’s recognition.
“We want to give the women in our community a heads up about the activities we have planned during Women’s Health Week and then remind them about each activity before it occurs,” said Theresa Yanchetz, director of marketing and public relations at Tyrone Hospital. “This will be a week where our women’s health professionals will be available at various times to answer questions and provide information about the women’s health resources available through Tyrone Hospital and its affiliated medical staff.”
The activities will kick off on May 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with Thomas O’Brien, M.D., providing free pap tests, gynecological exams and breast exams. Women who are interested in scheduling an appointment for this screening should call 684-3639.
A Women’s Health and Information Fair is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the main lobby of the hospital.
This event will provide a variety of information about women’s health topics including, but not limited to, prenatal education and obstetrics services at Tyrone Hospital, female urinary incontinence, the HealthyWoman Program (which offers free mammograms and other women’s healthcare to those who are eligible), alcohol and drug rehabilitation services, forms to provide advance consent for medical treatment of minors, and much, much more.
On Thursday, May 15, from 1-7 p.m., the Tyrone Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a Business Expo at the Bull Pen in Tyrone. Here, representatives from Tyrone Hospital and the office of Thomas O’Brien, M.D., Women’s Health Center of Tyrone, will be available to provide information regarding the women’s health services available through Tyrone Hospital and its affiliated medical staff.
To conclude the week, the hospital will sponsor a Mother/Daughter Women’s Health Education program. The topics of discussion have yet to be determined.
Women have unique health issues and concerns and their health issues vary over the lifespan,” said Yanchetz. “Tyrone Hospital wanted to use National Women’s Health Week as an opportunity to help women in our community learn more about the variety of resources available to them through Tyrone Hospital and its affiliated medical staff.”
Although this is the inaugural event of this type in the community, Yanchetz was quick to note that this isn’t the only time of the year the hospital or its affiliates take a concentrated look into women’s health issues.
“This is the first year we have organized an information fair specific to women’s health,” said Yanchetz. “Tyrone Hospital sponsors a number of community health fairs often in partnership with other local organizations and these events are well received.”
In addition, Yanchetz said the office of Thomas O’Brien conducts quarterly women’s health education programs and these programs have also been well received and there seems to be growing interest.
