Tyrone senior Amber DelBaggio was one of three recipients of the 2003 Blair County Sports Hall of Fame scholarship awards
“We are pleased to continue the tradition of honoring the top student-athletes in the county,” Hall of Fame president David Andrews was quoted as saying. “Once again, the recipients are outstanding role models.”
Amber DelBaggio ranks number one academically in her class of 163, with a grade-point average of 4.33 and scored 1220 on her Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).
Amber earned three letters in both basketball and volleyball and served as captain in both sports. DelBaggio set the school record for most career assists in volleyball, in addition to be selected to the Mountain League’s First Team All-Star squad.
“Amber is obviously very deserving of the award,” said Tyrone volleyball coach Dave Eckberg. “Her academic accomplishments at the school, being valedictorian of the senior class. Her schedule is always so full, but she always had time to excel for us, both on and off the court.”
Amber is a member of the Student Council and National Honor Society, and plans to attend Penn State Altoona, where she plans to try out for the volleyball team and perhaps the basketball team.
“Amber is truly what a model for what every student-athlete should be,” said Tyrone Athletic Director Tony Yaniello.
DelBaggio was the winner of the Levine Award at the 2003 All-Sports Banquet, which is presented to the outstanding female athlete at Tyrone Area High School and also received the Gordon L. Norris Memorial Scholarship Award presented to the outstanding graduating senior girl who has excelled both athletically as well as academically , with special emphasis in the field of mathematics. Amber was also a Scholar Athlete, at Tyrone having a grade point average of 3.75 or better, carrying five or more credits during her senior year with recommendations from all her teachers and coaches.
DelBaggio, along with Tom Forr from Bishop Guilfoyle and Matt from Altoona High School will be formally recognized when the Blair County Hall of Fame announces its 2004 inductees in July.
