“We tried to stress to the guys before the game that we needed to come out and get Nate some support,” said Martin Oil manager Ed Davis, “get him some runs. Fortunately we were able to jump on ReMax for three in the first and give Nate a little breathing room to work with.”
Martin Oil followed their manager’s wishes to the extreme in a 12-2 win in five innings Tuesday scoring 10 runs in the first two innings.
Martin Oil second baseman Andy Brisbin singled for the first of three hits in the game with one out in the top of the first in the game played at Mansion Park and moved up to second on an error by the ReMax right fielder. Zach Stere drilled a double to the fence in left-center to score Brisbin from second. Shawn Weiand drew a walk and winning pitcher Nate Carlson belted a double to score Stere and send courtesy runner Jesse Graham to third base. Derrick Miller scored Graham with an RBI groundout for a quick 3-0 lead.
ReMax came back with one tally in the first when A. J. Palazzi singled and eventually scored on an error by Chris Alley and got another in the third when Palazzi singled and Mike Montgomery singled to center to get Palazzi in.
Other than those two instances, it was all Nate Carlson, who limited ReMax to just four hits, two each by Palazzi and Montgomery and a pair of unearned runs, striking out nine and walking two to pick up the complete-game victory.
Martin Oil was able to make Carlson more than comfortable, batting around and scoring seven times in the second to take a 10-1 advantage after two at bats,
Matt Albright ripped a double following an inning-opening walk to Chris Alley. After another base on balls to Damion Miller, Brisbin beat out an bunt to score Alley. Stere walked to force in Albright and Weiand got Miller home with a sac fly. Carlson was safe on an error by the right fielder that allowed Stere to score. Derrick Miller struck out, but reached first when the ball got away from the ReMax catcher. Cory Daly raced all the way to third base and courtesy runner Chris Carrier and Derrick Miller scored when the ReMax centerfielder dropped the ball. Alley laced a single to left to score Daly for the final tally of the frame.
Carlson fanned the side in the third and fifth innings and got two strikeouts in both the second and fourth innings.
“Nate pitched a heck of a ballgame, nine strikeouts, couple walks and only four hits,” said Davis. “Excellent outing, Nate went five innings for us to save our relief pitchers.”
Martin Oil tacked on two additional runs in the top of the fifth and depended on Carlson to get ReMax out to nail down the win in five innings by the 10-run mercy rule.
Albright opened the inning with a single through the left side and Damion Miller drove the fifth double of the game for Martin Oil to straight-away center. With runners on second and third, Brisbin beat out his second bunt and third hit of the contest to score Albright. With Stere hitting, Martin Oil worked a double steal to score the final run of the ballgame. Brisbin took off for second, while Damion Miller scored from third base on the front end of the delayed double steal.
“Andy Brisbin is still ripping the ball with three hits tonight,” said Davis. “Zach Stere had a couple big doubles and two RBIs. Matt Albright had a couple hits , it’s good to see him snap into it. Chris Alley had a big hit.
“All-in-all, I was pretty pleased,” said Davis. “The pitching was outstanding, hitting was really good and defense was sufficient to hold us in the game. We just have to keep plugging away.”
Martin Oil (15-2) travels to Martinsburg to play Barkman Oil today at 6 p.m. at Central High School.
