Director Jim Kilmartin and the area teens at Joshua House had a busy summer with the three-on-three basketball tournament and numerous other entertaining activities.
Now that the school year has begun, Joshua House, located in 10th Street in Tyrone, is switching gears from its summer programs and hours to a new fall schedule.
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 3-4 p.m. is study hour where kids can visit Joshua House to work on homework and get help with tutoring and studying for the next day’s classes.
Monday and Tuesday from 4-6 p.m. is open hours, which is a time the kids enjoy the most. They can hang out with their friends and play video games to unwind from a busy day at school, all in the safe environment of the Joshua House.
Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. is also open hours. Kilmartin said that Wednesday night is considered game night, and while the warm weather is still here, outside games are played like wiffle ball or battle ball.
Thursday from 6-8:30 p.m. is Youth Church Bible Study. This is a time of fellowship and reflection for the kids who participate in the evening. As director of Joshua House and pastor, Kilmartin leads the bible study for all those in attendance.
Kilmartin said on average about 30 different teens a day visit the facility. The activities they participate in include: homework hour, pool tournaments, ping pong tournaments, Madden PlayStation 2 tournaments, computer time, and hanging out with friends.
Joshua House offers the teens a safe place to relax and spend time with their peers after school is over.
There has been some changes to the facilities since last year. Kilmartin is anticipating the arrival of a new television and PlayStation 2 system. Also, there is a new web site where pictures from the summer’s 3-3 basketball tournament can be viewed at www.joshuahousetyrone.org
Upcoming events that Joshua House is affiliated with include a See You at the Pole Rally at the Church of the Good Shepherd at 6:30 p.m. on September 14, a See You at the Pole Prayer gathering at the Tyrone Area High School flag pole at 7 a.m. on September 17 and Thrive at Joshua House at 6:30 p.m. on September 27.
