Fall and winter programming starts today at the Tyrone Area YMCA, and numerous programs are offered, including karate, fitness and exercise, water aerobics and water babies, among others.
Master Gary Josefik has been teaching martial arts at the Tyrone YMCA for almost 25 years. Korean Tang Soo Do teaches mental and physical conditioning, discipline, control and awareness. It can also give more confidence in everyday life. Beginners, intermediate and advanced students are welcome. There is also a tiny tigers program available for children ages four to six years old.
Another program offered is youth strength training for kids ages nine to 15. Instructor Nate Verilla will teach students a variety of cardiovascular, strength and flexibility exercises. The focus of the program is to learn proper form and technique on various equipment.
Besides swimming lessons, there is also water aerobics, an energy conditioning program designed for all ages. Water provides some of the best resistance that individual and multiple muscle groups may work against. With instructor Teresa Beisel, participants will develop strength and endurance in areas of the body that are not used in everyday situations. This program is held at the Tyrone Area High School pool.
Another water program with instructor Teresa Beisel is water babies, which is designed for children ages six months to three years in age. The objective for this program is to teach children to become comfortable in the water. Parental participation is encouraged.
Some of the highlights of the YMCA include the weight room that is available for use for ages 13 and up.
There is a variety of free weights, Nautilus machines, life cycles, treadmills and elliptical machine.
There is also a tanning bed at the YMCA, and there are many different tanning packages available. Interested individuals may call the YMCA to make an appointment.
The hours of the YMCA are as follows: Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The facility is closed on Easter, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
