A former agriculture teacher and one time member of the Antis Township Board of Supervisors, Robert Walker is looking to return to serving on the board.
“There are a number of concerns that I have,” said Walker. “I have been a public servant all my life. I love Antis Township. I returned her to retire and work the family farm with my son and grandson. I feel that I was helpful as a supervisor in the past. I am a team player and believe that all five supervisors need to work together and give better representation for the people.”
With the completion of Interstate 99 on the horizon, Walker sees growth as a major issue facing the township.
“I believe that we are going to grow rapidly,” said Walker. “We are a bedroom community between two growing metropolitan areas. It would be good for the supervisors to be aware of this and study the possible impact. We need to look at what other townships in similar situations have done. We don’t have to go far to look at an example. State College is a prime example.
“I want to preserve as much of the rural element as possible. We need to make sure the water supply is safe for use and give more thought to water in our area.”
With the expected growth, many townships are looking into land use management.
“We attempted to study the need for zoning when I was on the board,” said Walker.
“There was a group that was so well structured that it basically stopped the study. I believe that a study would point out the advantages and disadvantages of zoning in our township. We need to study to see if zoning is a viable option if it is done in a manner that will benefit the community.”
The proposed methadone clinic in Antis Township has many residents up in arms.
“There has been a lot of thought that has gone into the ways and means of preventing the clinic,” said Walker. “It is sad when you talk to a family that says they were taking medication and they became addicted. Treatment is needed. From what I understand about methadone, it is not a cure.
“I am trying to get more informed about how methadone can help addicted people. It is sad when someone has to drive two hours for treatment, then drive to work and repeat the process everyday.
“If we don’t do something to help these addicted people, the problem could get worse. People will rob, cheat and steal to continue to get what they need. The clinic might be the only thing we can do right now to help.”
Walker would like to return to the Antis Township Board of Supervisors.
“I will work with the other supervisors in a cooperative manner,” said Walker. “I will do my best to represent the people of the township. I am a good listener. I will take my time, get the facts and try to resolve problems and issues in the best manner possible.”
Walker is on the Republican ballot in the November election.
