Max Welton Kimmel, 86, of 303 Park Ave., Tyrone, PA died at 1:50 p.m. Tuesday, October 7, 2003 at the home of his daughter at RD1 Box 453, Sinking Valley, Tyrone, PA.
He was born November 26, 1916 at Rockwood, PA a son of the late Paul Will and Madge Naomi (Putnam) Kimmel.
He was married in May of 1939 in Tyrone, to Mary Belle Neil who died July 3, 1997.
He is survived by a son, Neil W. Kimmel and his wife Carole of Tyrone, and a daughter, Sally K. Parks and her husband Kenneth H. of RD1, Tyrone.
Nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. A brother, Rev. Myers P. Kimmel of Tyrone, and a sister, Leona Putnam Werick of Ohio, and a longtime friend, Betty Rose Gingery of Tyrone.
He was preceded in death by a son, Rev. Samuel P. Kimmel who died March 30, 1980, who was married to the former Linda Decker, who is now Linda and Daniel Kettell of Falls, Pa.
He was a member of the Tyrone Church of the Brethren.
His family moved to Tyrone from Johnstown in 1930 and he graduated from Tyrone High School in 1935. He received his BS Degree in History from Juniata College and his Masters Degree in Education from Penn State University.
His first teaching job was for three years at the one-room Main school located at McCann Crossing in Bald Eagle, named for the famed Walter L. Main Circus railroad accident. He then transferred to the old Logan Elementary School and later to the Lincoln Ave. High School where he taught Problems of Democracy. After a tour of duty in the U.S. Army during WWII, he returned to Elementary Education at the old Washington School. After the new Logan and Adams Schools were built in the early 1950s he was a teaching-principal in the new Logan School.
In the mid-seventies he was transferred to Adams and Lincoln Elementary schools as the acting principal.
He retired from the Tyrone Area School District in 1980 after a distinguished career of teaching Tyrone Area children for over 43 years.
He was also an avid reader and outdoors man.
Funeral service will be held Friday, October 10, 2003 at 11:30 a.m. at the Tyrone Church of the Brethren, Adams Ave. and 18th St., with Pastor Millie Baker officiating. Interment will follow at Grandview Cemetery, Snyder Twp.
Friends will be received at the Derman Funeral Home, Inc., Tyrone, on Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 and one hour before the service at the Tyrone Church of the Brethren.
