The Tyrone junior varsity boys basketball team won the Indian Valley Junior Varsity Tournament on Tuesday afternoon by defeating the host Indian Valley Jayvees in the championship game.
Tyrone reversed an earlier decision won by the Warriors at the buzzer 42-41 when the two schools played before the varsity game in early Dec.
This time the Eagles never gave Indian Valley a chance, using defense to stop their opponents and a balanced scoring effort as well in a 52-34 win.
Adam Corle led the Tyrone Jayvees with 16 points followed by Byron Kost with 13, Josh Clark with nine, Doug Morrow with eight. Adam Shaffer with four and Trey Brockett had two. The only Eagle that didn’t score more than made his presence felt. Justin Wilson pulled down a game-best 10 rebounds.
Tyrone jumped out to 14-5 and 15-5 leads to go into the locker room at halftime with a huge 29-10 lead, then added 10 more points to stretch the margin to 39-16 after three periods.
“We used a really effective half-court zone defense that put a lot of pressure on them,” explained coach Luke Rhoades. “The kids picked it up quickly and like it. They were really focused, everybody did all that we asked of them.”
