A storm moving from west to east blanketed northern Blair County with another heavy accumulation of snow as the second winter weather event this week brought nearly another foot.
Like Monday, morning commuters were out early this morning, shoveling paths and clearing vehicles.
“A really heavy burst of snow started working its way through the state,” said Mike Dangelo, a forecaster at the weather service\’s office in State College.
The snow moved from west to east, dumping two to three inches an hour in the mountains during its most intense period, he said.
As the snow fall diminished in the evening, high winds began to howl and were also whirling this morning.
Yesterday’s storm led to the cancellation of large numbers of high school sporting events across the state Tuesday night, including the Tyrone/Westmont District Team Duels, which will be made up Saturday morning; Tyrone boys’ basketball game at Lewistown, which will be made up Feb. 9; and Tyrone Junior High boys’ basketball at Lewistown, made up Feb. 9.
Also, Bellwood-Antis boys’ basketball at Williamsburg, B-A wrestling versus Portage at home; and B-A Junior High wrestling. These event will be made up tonight.
Superintendents at both districts called in two-hour delays this morning.
Widely scattered snow was expected across most of the state on Wednesday, forecasters said. The only location where the weather service was forecasting major snow was in the Laurel Highlands, where two to four inches was expected to fall overnight.
“They\’re the first range of mountains that those winds hit,” Dangelo said.
The rest of the week also looks bleak.
Sun is expected to come out tomorrow, but with highs in the upper 20s and winds from 10 to 15 miles per hour.
Overnight Thursday should be mostly cloudy with lows in the 20s.
Accumulations of snow may occur again Friday with a 40 percent chance on a somewhat blustery day.
