Tyrone Borough Police Department Chief Joe Beachem said yesterday that there are a “couple” of suspects in car burglary spree that began early last week.
Although he couldn’t comment further, Beachem did say the department is actively investigating the cases. He said since the report made last week, no other vehicles in the borough have been entered or vandalized.
The rash of burglaries began on Sunday, Jan. 18 and didn’t end until Thursday evening.
According to the Tyrone Police Log, the first call came at 2:15 a.m. on Jan. 18 by a man stating his vehicle was entered when parked on Blair Avenue. Removed was a portable CD player and miscellaneous paperwork.
Early Monday morning, police received a call from Rhonda Russell, stating her Chevy Cavalier was entered. She said nothing was taken.
On Tuesday at about 2:23 a.m., police responded to a report that a female was breaking into vehicles. While investigating, police discovered tracks in the snow leading to the 15th Street area. There, they made contact with an individual who fit the description that was given.
Four other calls were placed to police concerning vehicle break-ins on Tuesday afternoon. One caller claimed this was the second break in of his car, another said loose change was missing. The third said her vehicle was ransacked and the registration card was missing.
The fourth caller stated numerous items of value were taken, including two Bellsouth radios, a Nokia trac phone and a knife.
Another call was received Thursday.
Mark Wilson told police someone smashed the window out of his vehicle, but reported nothing missing.
He said in most cases, those responsible are breaking into vehicles looking for cash to fuel drug habits. In most cases, loose change is the only thing taken.
“There’s probably a good chance that these specific incidents are drug related,” he said.
Beachem also made note of two other robbery-related incidents that occurred this week in the borough.
He said on Saturday, a Logan Avenue resident called stating someone broke into her residence on the night of Jan. 15 and stole approximately 25 DVDs. She said the perpetrator entered through a front window.
Yesterday, police received a report from a Washington Avenue resident that someone removed a case of Miller Lite beer from the back porch.
He said these cases may or may not be linked to the car burglaries.
Beachem said residents are also asked to report any suspicious activity immediately by dialing 9-1-1.
