This Saturday and Sunday, the annual Tyrone Area Community Organization will hold its annual radio auction to be aired live over WTRN 1340 AM.
For the weekend, the Daily Herald offices will once again be transformed into the headquarters for the TACO radio auction, where the items and the phone lines will be located.
Individuals can participate by listening to TACO members describe the items over the airwaves, and if anyone is interested in bidding on an item, they may simply call 684-4000; 684-4001 or 684-4603 with an offer.
It is expected the auction will begin after the morning news on WTRN on Saturday and after 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Over the years, the radio auction has traditionally been broadcast over one day.
Because the auction has successfully grown, this is the first year that it has been expanded to fit over a two-day time period.
Cary Simpson and WTRN have donated airtime so that TACO can hold the radio auction over two days. Also, donated items for the event will be featured on a web site at www.wtrn.net.
Items can also be viewed throughout town at the Jackson Hewitt window on Pennsylvania Avenue and the Open Door Visions window on Tenth Street.
The money TACO raises helps to fund the projects the service organization sponsors for the Tyrone community in the coming year, and it is the group’s largest fund raiser of the year.
TACO sponsors such events as the Easter egg hunt, the fish rodeo, the Tyrone Halloween parade, a Distinguished Service Award and Boss of the Year Award.
It also sponsors a pee-wee baseball team and youth football competition as well as award four scholarships to seniors at Tyrone Area High School.
“It all goes back into the community,” said vice president of TACO Dave Kaup of the money the radio auction raises.
It is estimated that last year’s auction raised over $7,000 for the service organization to sponsor its events for the Tyrone community.
Chairpersons for the TACO radio auction include: president, Ruth Brower; vice president, Dave Kaup; Sid Garber and Buddy Daughenbaugh.
If anyone has questions or donations, or if anyone is interested in becoming a member of TACO, contact Buddy and Ruth at 684-3386; Sid at 684-5859 or Dave at 684-1592.
