Charlene Hand is the most recent recipient of Tyrone Hospital’s Extra Mile Employee Award.
Tyrone Hospital grants the award on a quarterly basis to an employee who demonstrates exceptional performance. Hand is a pharmacy technician and also a phlebotomist.
Hand is a life-long resident of Tyrone and currently resides with her husband, Bernie.
She joined Tyrone Hospital in June of 1989 and worked in the hospital’s laboratory for a number of years as a phlebotomist. In 1999, she moved to the hospital’s pharmacy where she is currently employed as a pharmacy technician.
Recently, Hand volunteered her time for a special project to benefit fellow co-workers. She reorganized an employee library that was established many years ago by a hospital employee. The casual lending library is a way for hospital employees to share books with co-workers.
Hand said she was very surprised to learn she was the Extra Mile Employee Award recipient.
“I am honored to be recognized by co-workers,” said Hand. “I love working at Tyrone Hospital. It is very family oriented and very caring.”
“The Extra Mile Employee Award is special because it is driven by hospital employees,” said Walter S. Van Dyke, interim Chief Executive Officer at Tyrone Hospital. “It is an honor to recognize employees like Mrs. Hand who have been singled out by their co-workers and recognized for exceptional performance.”
Recipients of the Extra Mile Employee Award receive a commemorative plaque, an extra paid personal holiday, and a letter of commendation for the hospital’s chief executive officer.
The Tyrone Hospital is celebrating 50 years of existence this year and a number of special events are planned leading up to the actual celebration date in September.
Earlier this year, the hospital opened a contest to all employees to seek a slogan for the celebration. When it all shook out, “Celebrating 50 Years: A Small Hospital with a Big Heart” was selected.
In Saturday’s edition of The Daily Herald, hospital marketing director Theresa Yanchetz helped readers explore the roots of the hospital and the key people who worked hard to bring a healthcare facility to Tyrone.
The Herald will feature more stories concerning the hospital and its role in the northern Blair County community over the next couple of months.
