(Editor’s note: This is the third installment in a week-long series featuring the lead performers and cast of Tyrone Area School District’s ‘The Wiz.’ The show is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, April 2-3 at the Tyrone High School auditorium.)

Next to be introduced in the spotlight on the lead characters of The Wiz is Tyrone Area High School senior Shane Gherrity, Jr.
Shane has previously performed at TASD in The Music Man and Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. He has also appeared in the Tyrone Community Players’ production of Sherwood.
He has been in Vocal Attraction for a year and POPS Extension for four years. He was also part of the TASD marching band percussion line for two years.
When asked about music Shane responded, “I’ve always enjoyed having music in my life since I was a little boy. My pap’s hunting camp band, the Schoch Hollow Band, was a big contributor for me liking music. My pop-pop and grandya always were singing songs and playing the organ for me. My dad was in a classical rock band, who practiced at the house.
“I’d like to send a special thank you out to all my family for supporting me with everything. Grandya and pop-pop, you’ve been a great inspiration for me, especially you pop-pop. Dad, you may not live with me anymore, but you are still always there for me. I love you. Mom-mom, you’ve stayed strong through all the hard times with losing pap. Thank you for all your support. Mom, thanks for lugging me around to everything I’ve been in for 18 years. I love you very much. Aunt Maryland, thank you for all those $5 bills after every performance. Thanks for all your support.
“Finally my little sis, Becca. Thanks for giving up the first 12 years of your life just to come to everything I’ve been in. I love you so much. Special thanks to all my friends, especially the ‘Fab 4’. Thank you guys for making this a memorable show!”
The community is invited to come see Shane “Slide Some Oil” in TASD’s production of The Wiz on Friday, April 2 and Saturday, April 3. Tickets may be reserved by calling 684-4240, extension 3700.
