Linda Hershey, chairperson of the Tyrone YMCA board, recently announced that $9,500 has been raised in contributions and pledges during the initial phase of the Tyrone Area YMCA’s annual fund drive.
The goal for the campaign is $36,000. Members of the board of directors are encouraged by the community’s response in the beginning of the fund drive.
“We are picking up momentum,” said Hershey. “We’ve mailed information to the community and are following up with phone calls and personal visits. Members of the board have formed teams of volunteers to make personal contact with as many people, groups and organizations as possible.
“It is gratifying to know that the reaction has been very positive as people recognize the important work of the YMCA and the need to fund the many programs and maintain aging facilities. I particularly want to thank The Daily Herald and WTRN for their support in publicizing not only the campaign, but the day-to-day activities of the Y.”
She asked that the community respond generously when contacted by a fund drive volunteer. The drive is expected to continue through the month of April.
Hershey also announced that the annual fund drive spaghetti dinner is scheduled for Sunday, April 25 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Tyrone Area High School. The meal will feature DelGrosso’s sauce and meatballs.
“If you enjoy pasta at DelGrosso’s Amusement Park during the summer, you’ll love spaghetti at the high school in the spring,” said Hershey.
Tickets are $6 and are available from YMCA staff and board members at the Y. Takeout will be available the day of the dinner.
The YMCA is reinstituting youth dances beginning Friday, April 16 from 7-9:30 p.m. The dance is for students from the fifth through eighth grades. Admission is $2 for YMCA members, otherwise, $3. Refreshments will be available. A DJ will provide music, and there will be security and adult presence at the event.
