Northern Bedford routed the Bellwood-Antis girls’ softball team 15-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Bellwood.
The Lady Panthers, fresh from a 22-2 mark in 2003 with seven returning starters had little trouble with the inexperienced Lady Blue Devils, who have just one returning starter in uniform and hopes of getting a second girl back soon from surgery.
Winning pitcher Erin Godshall, a left-hander, allowed just one hit, struck out five and walked two in picking up the victory for Northern Bedford.
Kate Wright and Felicia Amick each banged out a single and a double to lead the Lady Panthers’ attack with Northern Bedford scoring four in the first, a pair in the third, before putting the away with nine runs in the fourth inning. Amick drove home three runs and Wright added a pair of RBIs.
Chelsea Kephart broke up Godshall’s bid for a no-hitter with a fourth-inning single. Heather Detwiler drew a walk in the fourth inning for the Lady Blue Devils, but both runners were stranded. Earlier, Kasey Narehood became the first base runner for the B-A girls, walking in the third inning.
Heather Detwiler struck out one and walked nine for the Lady Blue Devils.
Walks and errors plagued the Bellwood-Antis girls. Northern Bedford received nine walks and the Blue Devils committed six errors and numerous passed balls to allow the Lady Panthers to score in bunches.
“We had one bad inning that made the game seem like it was a waste,” said Bellwood-Antis coach Alex Sitman. “The girls are learning with each game. We are very young and inexperienced and you can’t teach experience, that comes one game at a time.”
Weather permitting, Bellwood-Antis will host Tyrone on Friday at 3:30 p.m. Perhaps a more realistic date with the weather forecast is Monday’s scheduled contest at Southern Huntingdon, with the first pitch set for 4 p.m.
