The Glendale Vikings did their best for four innings yesterday to keep a finger in the dam and contain Tyrone\’s potent line-up.
But when you\’re dealing with a team batting a collective .438 and averaging almost 12 hits per game, the question is when will the deluge come and how bad will it be.
Tyrone\’s came in the top of the fifth when three infield hits and Barry Gummo\’s team-leading sixth double of the season opened the floodgates for a five-run inning, as part of the Golden Eagles\’ 11-1, 10-run rule shortened game at the Harry K. Sickler Sports Complex in Tyrone.
The win was the Eagles third straight and it upped Tyrone\’s record to 6-1 on the season. The game also marked the seventh time this season that Tyrone eclipsed double figures in hits for a single game.
But this time they weren\’t the extra-base bombs the Golden Eagles had produced in abundance over the last two weeks. Tyrone singled the Vikings (3-5) to death and made the most of its on-base opportunities.
“I tell our kids to put the ball in play and make their defense make the outs,” said Tyrone manager Tom Coleman. “We did that today and we beat a lot of plays out, they threw some balls around, and we got runs from it.”
One person who was glad to benefit from some errand throws for a change was Gummo. In his last pitching start, Gummo allowed no earned runs but suffered a 6-4 loss to West Branch after Tyrone committed nine errors. Yesterday, the Eagles erred just once in the field – leading to an unearned run – and Gummo logged his third win in four starts, striking out a season-high eight batters and allowing just two hits.
“Barry looked a lot smoother in his delivery today and he had a good outing – probably one of his best of the year,” said Coleman. “He\’s a good starting pitcher. He worked ahead and did a very good job.”
Gummo also kept alive a seven-game hitting streak that has him hitting a team-leading .636 with a double to deep left field in the fifth that drove in Nick Cushion, making it 9-1. He later scored on a throwing error, capping a five-run inning sparked by consecutive infield hits by Derrick Soellner, Tyler Rickards and Cushion.
Soellner along with Clint Wilson each had a pair of hits to lead an 11-hit attack, while Brandon Maceno drove in two runs. Cushion, Justin Wilson and Jeremy Myers each scored twice.
Tyrone led 1-0 after the first and made it 5-1 after four by tacking on two runs apiece in the third and fourth frames. Maceno and Clint Wilson each drove home runs in the third – Wilson with a single and Maceno with a sacrifice fly – and Ben Gummo picked up his eighth RBI of the season in the fourth with a run-scoring groundout.
Glendale\’s only run came in the fourth when a Rickards error at third put aboard Derrick Strong, who eventually scored on a double steal.
Tyler Noel took the loss for the Vikings, pitching five innings and allowing 10 runs on 10 hits.
Game notes: Brice Mertiff saw his streak of three straight games with a triple come to an end….Gummo pitched his second straight complete game….Brit Mingle went without an RBI for the first time this season. Mertiff went RBI-less for only the second time.
