The Tyrone Legion headed into their Sunday doubleheader 2-0 and on top of the Kelly Federation standings following an error free victory over Hoss\’s three days before. They finished the day 2-2 and compiled nine errors in two losses to Dick\’s Pharmacy and ReMax.
Things got off to a good start for Tyrone in their first match-up against Dick\’s Pharmacy when Barry Gummo led off the first with a bunt single and stole second.
Gummo was 3-3 in the game and 5-6 on the day to up his average to a team leading .692.
However, Dick\’s Pharmacy pitcher Jim Clancy retired the next three batters in order to assure the game remained scoreless.
Dick\’s Pharmacy loaded the bases against Tyrone hurler Clint Wilson in the bottom half of the first, but regained his composure and got out of the inning without a run crossing the plate.
After Clancy got the first out of the second, Jason Wilson had an amazing at bat in which he fouled off four pitches and worked a walk then stole second. Wilson moved to third on a wild pitch, and Clancy got Ben Lynn to strike out, but Lynn reached and Wilson scored when the ball got away from catcher Chris Zemelduck to put Tyrone up 1-0.
Dick\’s Pharmacy took the lead in the third taking advantage of three walks, a single and a Shane Stiffler RBI double to put the home team up 2-1.
Their lead didn\’t last long as Tyrone fought back in the top of the fourth. Derrick Soellner, who went 3-4 in the game and 5-7 on the day, singled to lead off the inning and stole second. Jason Wilson put down a perfect bunt that he beat out for a single. The throw got away from Stiffler at first base and Soellner came around to score. Wilson stole second and moved to third on a Shane Gherrity bunt. Gherrity reached first when the throw to third was not in time to retire Wilson. Before the next pitch, Clancy caught Gherrity off first base, and Wilson took off for home. After a run down, Gherrity was tagged out, but Wilson swiped home to give Tyrone a 3-2 lead.
Dan DePaulis made certain that Tyrone wouldn\’t keep the lead long when he led off the fourth with a triple to center. Tom Seasoltz knocked in the tying run with a RBI single and scored on a double steal later in the inning. Brandon Maceno relieved Clint Wilson and allowed another runner to score on a double steal, but got out of the inning down only two with the score 5-3.
Tyrone tied the score in the fifth with the help of some power. Barry Gummo singled and stole second, but got caught in a run down on a Ben Gummo grounder to short stop. He was unable to elude a tag from third basemen Dustin James and made the first out of the inning. After a Maceno line out, Ben Gummo stole second. Gummo took off for third on the next pitch, and the throw ended up in left field allowing Gummo to score. Clint Wilson and Derrick Soellner followed with back-to-back two-out doubles tying the score at five.
Tyrone was once again unable to produce a shut down inning as Dick\’s Pharmacy used two errors, a walk, three singles and a Seasoltz two-run double to take an 8-5 lead before Jason Wilson came on in relief and got James to fly out.
Dick\’s Pharmacy added a run in the sixth inning, and Tyrone faced a four-run deficit heading into the top of the final inning.
Barry Gummo reached for the fourth time with a leadoff walk and scored on a two-out double by Clint Wilson. Soellner kept the rally going with a single to knock in Wilson, but Clancy got a strike out to preserve the 9-7 victory for Dick\’s Pharmacy.
“We made some mental mistakes and those will kill you. This is a learning process and it\’s still early in the season,” said acting head coach Adam DeArmitt.
The tail end of the doubleheader played out much like the first half. Tyrone took an early lead and then fell victim to a couple big innings.
Barry Gummo continued to swing a hot bat with a lead off double to the fence. Brandon Maceno followed with a single but got caught in a run down trying to take second. Trying to take advantage of the run down, Gummo tried to score but was thrown out at home. Derrick Soellner put Tyrone gave Tyrone the lead with a double to the wall that scored Maceno, but it would be all Tyrone would get in the first inning.
In the bottom of the first, Tyrone Legion pitcher Ben Gummo walked lead off hitter Adam Kaack, but Jared Rodgers killed any possible ReMax rally by making a great catch in right field and firing to first to double off Kaack.
Tyrone stretched its lead to two with some two out lightning. Rodgers followed his great defensive play with a solid single to left, and scored on a two out double by Barry Gummo.
ReMax flexed its muscles in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead for good with a four run inning. Matt Zeak followed a hit by pitch and two singles with a bases clearing triple and scored on a throwing error.
Soellner singled to lead off the third and got as far as third base, but Tyrone would not get another base runner the entire game.
Meanwhile, ReMax added a run in their half of the third, and got to Gummo for seven runs in the fourth using five singles, three Legion errors and a double by Chris Packard.
When Tyrone couldn\’t muster a run in the top of the fifth, the game ended via ten-run-rule at 12-2.
“We brought the bats together and hit the ball hard today, but we need to bring everything together at once,” said DeArmitt about the effort.
Tyrone used four pitchers in the two games.
“It\’s tough to play eight games in seven days with a limited pitching rotation,” added coach Tom Rumberger.
Tyrone is in action Tuesday against Park Furniture at 6:00 PM in Tyrone.
Legion Notes: Tyrone is hitting .290 as a team, but Derrick Soellner, Barry Gummo and Clint Wilson are hitting a combined .595… The rest of the team is batting a combined .129…Tyrone stole eleven bases in the first game, but only Soellner was able to swipe a bag against ReMax. After drawing eighteen walks in one game against Hoss\’s, Tyrone drew only three in the doubleheader. Tyrone has given up zero earned runs in their two wins but allowed fourteen in their two losses.
