Tyrone Elementary fifth grader James Russell had his entry in the Tyrone Hospital’s poster contest chosen best of more than 300 entrants.
Recently, the Tyrone Hospital Auxiliary announced James as the winner. Second place went to Tyrone Kindergarten student Sarah Wilson; Madalyn Miller, a Tyrone first grader, took third.
Students K-5 from both Tyrone Elementary and St. Matthew’s submitted posters developed around the hospital’s 50th anniversary slogan “Celebrating 50 years, A Small Hospital with a Big Heart 1954-2004.”
There were 311 posters submitted and members of the hospital family and public were invited to view the posters and vote for their favorites. There were 282 votes submitted which determined the contest winners.
Donna Carson, treasurer of the Tyrone Hospital Auxiliary and member of Tyrone Hospital’s 50th Anniversary Planning Committee, said the public is welcome to visit Tyrone Hospital and admire the posters which will remain on display on the first floor at Tyrone Hospital through the second week of June. The winning posters are marked with a yellow star.
Mrs. Carson said the winning posters will be displayed again during the hospital’s 50th anniversary celebration to be held in September.
“We have heard a lot of positive comments about the posters and the sentiment the children expressed through their artwork,” said Mrs. Carson. “It was very uplifting and will surely make this 50th anniversary year memorable.”
The Tyrone Hospital Auxiliary provided prizes for the first, second, and third place contest winners. Overall contest winners received coins mounted to form the number 50.
First place received 50, one dollar pieces; second place received 50, 50-cent pieces; and third place received 50 quarters.
DelGrosso’s Amusement Park provided prizes for the grade level winners from each school.
In addition, Mrs. Carson provided a small treat for each child that attended the awards assembly held at each school. Prizes were presented to the students by Walter S. Van Dyke, chief executive officer at Tyrone Hospital.
Mrs. Carson said those who have organized the poster contest are grateful for the assistance provided by the staff at both schools and for the contributions from the Tyrone Hospital Auxiliary and DelGrosso’s.

Kintergarten, Emily Beam; first grade, Ryan Cassatt; second grade, Jordan Miller;
third grade, Olivia Morrison; fourth grade, Cassie Kasic; and fifth grade, Taylor Goss.
Tyrone Elementary School grade level winners
Kintergarten, Chance Burke; first grade, Madalyn Miller; second grade, Simon Wilson; third grade, Cody Nail; fourth grade, Skyler Yanchick; and fifth grade, Victoria Frey.
Overall contest winners
1st place: James Russell, fifth Grader, Tyrone Elementary
2nd place: Sarah Wilson, Kintergarten, Tyrone Elementary
3rd Place: Madalyn Miller first Grader, Tyrone Elementary
